Snowy is poorly today

He is dripping snot down one nostril and the smell is making me heave

He seems okayish in himself - fairly bright and reasonably alert, and he is not coughing. Will take his temp shortly.

I have had horses with coughs, colds, even strangles, and never seen this.

Any ideas anyone?

When mine had strangles his snotty stuff smellt foul! But he had zero absesses or much swelling rounds the glands... just thick awful gooey stuff coming out of him.

Take his temp and go from there id guess. Has he been in contact with anything that could have brought strangles on?

Snot like that makes me gag....poor Snowy. I would suspect sinus problem if he isnt showing any other strangles signs.

Thanks ladies, the smell is that of an infection. It's awful!

PMSL Spaniel, I was holding him while he was being shod this morning, and he was nuzzling my hair face and shoulders, with stinking snot dripping out. I now stink!

Taken his temp, and it is slightly elevated, so I have spoken to my vet and am now off to pick up antbiotics for him.

Hopefully it isn't strangles, but please keep your fingers crossed for him.

If it is sinusitis you need to get the vet to scope him to find out but the medicine i bought for paony (jusy one small bottle) was £300 and that was getting it cheap. Dont leave it as I was told if i had it could have been worse.

Hope he get well soon! bless him my daughter said her pony had bad breath!!!!

Yes I remember the smell well!!!
My boy had a fractured cheek tooth which caused this. It was missed at first and eventually had to come out under GA. If it doesnt clear up soon, I think its the vet Im afraid.

I was going to say teeth too. Like Louby my mare had a split cheek tooth, vet missed this, tried AB's, suggested scoping. In between times had the vet who specialises in teeth (unfortunately now gone to Oz) and he found the split tooth.

Sounds like his sinuses. Get your vet to have a look. Sometimes a tooth abcess can infect the sinus and cause very bad smelling snot.
Dont rule out strangles but it is probably his sinuses.

Thanks everybody.

As some of you may remember, Snowy had to have extensive dental treatment when we first had him, and actually had deformed teeth from birth. He has a few 'stumps' at the back, rather than the teeth forming a continual grinding plate, if you will.
The EDT did tell us that because of the tooth formation, there was a high chance that food could collect between the teeth and go off, causing problems for him, so it is a distinct possibility that this could be the reason for his ailment.

He's on a five day course of antibiotics, and has been brought home, away from the other horses, as a precaution. If there's no improvement, the vet will reassess.

In the meantime, I have decided to get the EDT out to take a look in his mouth.

Will let you know the outcome

Snowy doesn't 'do' stables (boxwalks and crib bites

) but he settled down well last night, and had a good roll when we put in him, and munched his way through the best part of a haynet full of hay, and his bucket of feed.
When checked at 11pm he was fast asleep, crashed out on the shavings.
He must be poorly as when we took him his brekkie this morning, his bed wasn't trashed, and he hadn't eaten half of his stable door.

Dubbs I am really sorry to hear this cant offer any advice but you are not alone thick snot makes me retch...Good healing vibes to Snowy and a hug to you too

Well his runny nose is now crusty and pretty dry. No smell either.
It was seriously dripping initially - there were huge blobs of rancid snot dropping on the floor, as well as a constant drip (like a leaky tap).
A good sign maybe?

He has just wandered into his stable ready for bed, and that is just not like him, as he hates stables usually, and does his best to kick his way out, so I reckon he must still be feeling off colour.
So difficult to tell really, as he's such a placid boy anyway...

I suppose when he starts protesting at being in, I'll know hes feeling better.

A horse at my old yard had this - the smell really is the most heave-inducing thing

. He had an abcess (can't remember if it was a tooth or something in his face somewhere), ended up having to go the vets to get it sorted, yucky yucky!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh hunny, only just seen your post.

I hope the wee grey man is feeling better?

He's been through so much and really doesn't deserve to be poorly!

I hope he is back to form and trashing his stable!
