Poorly yearling sever anemia

Hi we have a yearling colt who just over a week ago we bought in as he was cold and looked a bit under the weather he then went off his food and drink and for some reason was alway wet (on him) in his stable though we cant work out why as because he is hardly drinking his bed is very dry. He did not pick up so the vet came out took bloods etc, turns out he has anemia though she was expecting something to show up as some kind of infection in the liver etc though everything was more or less normal. He is hardly drinking and eating tiny amounts just stood at the back looking like he is going to give up soon, vet is back out tommrrow morning but if anyone had any other ideas as even the vet is a bit puzzled!

no worms wormed last month, vet has done a count and ruled that out!

Sounds like he's fighting an infection or a virus.

Has your vet treated with an antibiotic cover and pain relief in the short term?

no idea but if you can get him to eat maybe put him on pink powder to boost immne system. poor lad hope he is feeling better soon x

yea he is on antibiotics and bute among many other potions the vet gave but as nothing showed up in the bloods (which we have done twice to be sure!) we are not sure about the infection route...but who knows! thanks guys

Get the vets to give him a B6 injection, works miracles, also feed him small feeds as many times each day as possible, even if you have to feed him from the hand. You could also encourage him by putting a decahedron ball in the stable with some treats in.

ok will check what he has had already injection wise, poor thing is like a pin cushion at the moment! the last few days he has been having 4 small feeds a day only as he struggles to eat so is hand fed them but i dont think he would eat any more but shall try! will let you know the outcome x

Get some vit b,s in to him that will boost his liver and if he is anemia you should get loads of iron in to him as well!x

Ah thanks! same really had already had the b6 injection the last time so did not need that we are all a bit stuped, we are going to try turning him out for (if the weathe is ok!) for about half a hour or so today to see if he will eat some grass but we are playing a bit of a waiting game at the moment.........!

Get him drinking a bit more, it will be good for him whatever is wrong, try Horse Quencher, a very new product on the market, www.horsequencher.co.uk - it's fabulous and it works! It looks like muesli and you pop it in half a bucket of water and it gets horses drinking immediately.
