My new mare who is rising 3 has started "clicking/popping" in walk. Is from the rear end? Hock?

I have been told that this is commonish in young horses although I have not heard of it before. I was also advised to give a joint supplement?

Glad you asked this as my rising 5 year old does it, can't tell if it's the hock, fetlock or stifle but it's intermittent and doesn't seem to bother him. Sometimes all his legs click when picking his feet out so am starting to wonder if I bought one of those 'Happytime' toy horses that I had as a kid in the 70's!!

I'm told by experienced trainer and others it's air in the joints, or something to do with synovial fluid, supposedly nothing to get stressed over but have nagging doubts, please let me know if you find anything.

My horse has a clicky stifle and in the 9 years I've had him has never had a problem. Although saying that I can't remember the last time he did it, so maybe he has grown out of it with age??? He is on a joint supplement.

My friends horse also does it and he passed a 5 stage vetting, he did it during the vetting and the vet didn't even comment. (we didn't ask either...) so I asume it's something and nothing.

Usually it comes from the stifle - air popping in the joint as daisychain says. Very common in growing horses. They usually grow out of it, but we had a 10 yr old who still had it on occasion. Never caused any problems.

Thanks so much to all those who replied. That helps and makes me feel better. Is there any more info I can find on the net about it?

Wold a joint supplement help at all?

My horse seems to do this and I he is 17. I think (?) he has always done it but has never had any problems. I had the vet out last year as I was worried he was maybe getting arthritis in his hocks or somewhere but no he's fine. Think some horses just have more 'clicky' joints that others, like humans I guess.

Personally am not giving mine anything. All he's having at present is grass. I've tried to remove all additional feeds from his diet since I heard a lot of joint problems in youngsters stem from them being fed too well.

I should put her on something like surelimb Dodson and Horrell. and a good glucosomine plus msm supplement, just incase there is any deficiances in her diet, and as above dont overdo the hardfood, plenty of good grass/haylege etc.

I've got an 8yr old TB with clicky joints. I've asked the vet about it and they weren't that bothered, so long as she's sound and happy. She's been on cortaflex for 2-3mths now and it hasn't made any difference. I first noticed it last autumn, so thought it might be (air) temperature related, but she's still clicking now.
