Yesterday I took Poppy for a lovely long walk over local MOD land , which is mainly heathland with some dense forests and a large pond . Poppy had a great time cooling off in the pond and it was so funny to watch her 'swim ' - she still kept her front legs on the ground whilst kicking her little chicken leg leg's out !
Although we have had poppy for about 4 months now we have not been confident enough to let her off the lead . She has quite a good recall and will 'sit' and 'stay' and we where on a very quite path on the common so we decieded to let her off the lead - sort of ! My mum dropped the flexi lead and instead of picking it up we kept her off , with the lead trailing behing her LOL . We thought it was best like this because a) it meant we could quickly grab the lead if we saw another dog approaching and b ) she can be quite tricky to get the lead back on . Anyway , she had a great time and stayed close by us the whole way home . It was great not to have her constantly straining on the lead

This morning i found a TICK just above her right leg !! I have never had this happen before

Go to vet/pharmacist and buy a tick hook - very cheap - thing, which takes it off, head and all, assuming you don't have a vet or med student friend who has access to artery forceps... which also work well enough.

For future prevention, Avantix works well in Devon, OH's dog gets fewer and those he has got have died very quickly...

I have a Poppy dog too (a JRT).

Do you live near Bramshott - thats where my brother and his wife live, and the have lovely walks nearby over a lovely common, and lots of MoD land.

Glad you had a nice walk, it's the best feeling when you can let them off to enjoy themselves isn't it!

I can't find my tick hook so had to be really brave and twist one off Henry last night (yuck). Got it off in one though, and found flaming the thing very satisfying (wan't being gratuitously cruel, apparantly you are meant to do this in case they have nasty diseases!)

Really have to find the hook though, it is much simpler and less icky

It can't be far away, used it yesterday morning to remove two ticks that were getting jiggy with it in poor Henry's groin
