Hi,

I have a stunning black and tan imported Doberman young entire male.

I'm just curious if there are many Doberman breeders/fans here?

My dog is by Alea by the sea (Trotyl de black shadow X Sienna Betelges)

Pics to follow.

Thanks

Had them for 30 years. Lost my last to Lymphosarcoma at the age of three.
Don't have one now as I don't like the current trend towards big & triangular.

Ive had 4, all rescues, my first Leo was by Amazon Sound Machine who was top Dobe at Crufts for a few years.
Fred, my much missed boy was another private rescue, I cant find his pedigree atm but he was mostly German, Eastern European bloodlines and was hell of a sharp dog, very trainable though and focused.

My current 2 brother and sister Diesel & Darcy were both from Dobermann Welfare and Ive no idea of their breeding.

Will post pics later when I have more time.

OP what do you intend doing with your dog or is he just simply a pet?

I just love Dobes, they are such a beautiful elegent dog, they have a sense of humour but can do the business. All mine have an innate sense of something which is not right, they have all been 100% trustworthy around strangers but are wary of certain people.

Just got one from some novice owners who imported him thinking theyd like to breed- then found he was too much for them!! Russian bred, sire del Nasi, dam grand vimko.
Never liked Dobes or had anyting to do with them before- since I got this fella I'm in love! Took him to his first sch class this week (for obedience and tracking ONLY, Ive no interest in protection work). He learns so fast- SUPER DOG love him to bits.
You have to do everything on your terms tho- theyr a dominant breed- dont let them take the iniatiative or he'l end up being in control!

We had 2 dobes growing up and they were the best family dogs ever!!!
I don't have one at the moment cos I live in a small flat and when I got the last dog wouldn't have had time to do the correct training and socialisation one needed.
Tbh though I don't know why there not more popular as family dogs I think there a great breed. And far more trainable than the more commen family breeds.

I'm sorry you've lost yours, were they bred in the Uk ?. Have a look at my boy he's not 'piggish' as I find a trend of dobe breeding in England.

Thanks !

Sounds lovely and yes they're very sharp and alert with a distinct protective nature towards their family just as Louis Dobermann intended when he bred this fabulous breed.

Chenzo is starting a stud career and I was just curious to post to see how popular dobes are on here.... He's from Poland and he is the most fantastic dog who's exceptionally loyal and beautiful. I'm hoping to import a bitch soon possibly from the Altobello Kennel. He's a joy to have around and always gets loads of complimentS when he's out and about With me :)

I absolutely hate them. My pony was attacked by one whilst I was leading her. The dog broke away from its handler. They are too big too strong and too fierce. A couple in our village had one , they have had dogs of all sorts and other dobermans all their lives. This latest one got away from them, ran down the high street several times. It also got away from being walked passed my house and chased my cat my own garden. Thank goodness the dog is now dead.
The ownership of dobermans should be restricted to the police and the military only.

I'm sorry you have had bad experiences with Dobermans, but your last statement is a very narrow minded view.

My dad has had dobes for over twenty years now, he currently has two.

All his dobes have been fab family dogs with lovely temprements.

Why import??

Piggish? Not seen that but more unbalanced frontv rear.

I had four generations here English & USA stock. The one German dog I used brought in Vwb so I had to step back & went to USA stock again.

What made you choose your import?

What a ridiculous statement. Dobermanns are big and strong- but there are many breeds just as big, or bigger and stronger. As for fierce- check the statistics..... Dobermanns rate as being much lower on the aggression scale than many other breeds. And are one of the lowest on 'dog to owner' aggression.
Any dog can be ill-mannered and get away from its handler if not properly trained. And most dogs of any breed or cross will chase a cat if they arent used to them and get the chance.

If a handler cannot hold a dog and it chases a cat, squirrel, horse, sheep, anything then thats totally unacceptable. The dog is stronger than the handler. This is unsafe. People should not be allowed to own such dogs. Its too dangerous. as stated in my previous post my horse was attacked by a doberman and my cat chased on my own premises by another. You think this is ok do you?
I do not. People shouldnt be allowed to own dogs they cannot control. This applies to dobermans and any other type/breed.
Why on earth do people want these savage breeds anyway? There are plenty of nice types around. guard dog types should only be allowed in the armed forces and the police.

My dad's first dobe was a huge dog, yet my sister and I walked him on our own form the age of 10 and eleven, never had any problems and he never got away form us. And as for savage  never ever have any of my dad's dobes been savage. I don't know about anyone else but I've never heard or read of anyone being savaged to death by a dobe, many by staffies/pitbull types, however.

I'm sorry but this is such a ridiculous statement. There are hundreds of dogs which are stronger then their handler, if a Labrador decided to chase a cat whilst on the end of a lead I am sure a handler would have trouble holding it!!!

Savage dogs? In your experience, maybe, but don't paint the whole breed with the same brush!

PMSL!!

The police and military in the UK don't really use Dobes any more - do you know why that might be?!

My vicious guard dog type got lots of nice pets and cuddles today from some elderly tourists from Florida while a field of sheep dozed peacefully nearby :)

Re importation, I do understand why people do it, it helps widen the gene pool and I know personally speaking if you are looking for a working dog (I am not sure if the OP is working her dog), the European lines tend to be better than what we breed in the UK.

What a load of horlicks, you should be blaming the owners not the dogs, 3 of my Dobes have come to me because the previous owners couldnt handle them. We get more problems with Labs and GSDs around here running out from driveways and attacking kids on ponies.

I dont condemn any breed of dog only bad owners, as I said in my previous post Ive had 4 and they have never attacked any domestic animal or person and they all have after training been excellent with other dogs.

My vet always says he would rather see a Dobe come through the door as he has never met a bad one and they accept everything being done to them without a murmur or muzzle.

sorry, Cave Canem -whats PMSL?
I think one of the reasons Dobes aren't used for police/military work in colder climates is they turn into wimps in the rain.
But apart from that, the GSD does the job superbly. Why use another breed - the Dobe is much more a 'one man dog' than a GSD, and maybe isnt such a suitable temperament.
Imported dogs- Dobe and GSD- are usually imported because people want dogs truer to the original type. In Germany, the original home of both, all dogs have to pass a working test (IPO, Sch and ZTP for Dobes) before being bred from, or shown And also have to pass many breed-specific health tests.
Here in the UK and Ireland any GSD and Dobe, however good or bad in conformation and temperament can be bred from.

I have heard from the military police and the police on several occasions why they dont use them any more. They are highly intelligent and if someone is in a building shooting they will ****** off :D and who can blame them.
