Popularity of Dobermans

Ha Ha like it! Sensible dogs. The Malinois is more likely for flight than fight too- they do use them for police work in some places tho.
I think the Dobes tend to be more sensitive (in mind and body) than a GSD.

Peeing ;p myself laughing.

As mentioned by you both, modern Dobes don't really have the coat or the temperament for police or army work. They can be noise sensitive, have crowd issues and as can be seen in agility and obedience, they can be giving beautiful work one minute and the next just take themselves off somewhere else and do laps of the field :p
If they don't fancy doing something, they just won't. None of these issues is isolated to the Doberman having said that.

There are exceptions as lots compete very well at agillty as my trainers does, also working trials, Im on lots of Dobe fb groups and get to see their videos and very impressive they are. They are all Eastern European bloodlines though and as Ive said before I do believe the GB ones have been dumbed down for the pet market.

I would hate to see the breed rise in popularity again as there are so many in rescue so OP unless you have 2 exceptional health tested dogs I would give breeding a miss as they have huge litters.

I have a rare vunerable breed a Lancashire Heeler and although she is from health tested parents and won in the show ring we will not be breeding. We couldnt bare the thought of losing her giving birth and then the worry of finding top class homes for the pups and they are a breed who only have 7 pups maximum and quite often only have 1 or 2.

ve said before I do believe the GB ones have been dumbed down for the pet market.

Well I didn't want to say that :o but again, that's not isolated to Dobermans.

(And before anyone starts, working/active/spunky dogs and family pets which don't savage everything in sight, are not mutually exclusive :p)

If a handler cannot hold a dog and it chases a cat, squirrel, horse, sheep, anything then thats totally unacceptable. The dog is stronger than the handler. This is unsafe. People should not be allowed to own such dogs. Its too dangerous. as stated in my previous post my horse was attacked by a doberman and my cat chased on my own premises by another. You think this is ok do you?
I do not. People shouldnt be allowed to own dogs they cannot control. This applies to dobermans and any other type/breed.
Why on earth do people want these savage breeds anyway? There are plenty of nice types around. guard dog types should only be allowed in the armed forces and the police.

I think this is the biggest load of rubbish. Horses/ponies are far bigger than dobermans and can be extremely dangerous in the wrong hand. Does this mean you shouldnt have one??

It really makes me angry when people spout off over dobermans. They can be the softest dogs ever,BUT like any breed of dog or any other animal for that matter in the worng hands can be dangerous!!!
Our dobermans were the sofest friendlist things ever far nicer than the terrier i had at the time. My sister had rabbits while we had the dobes and they used to clean them licking while they were on my sisters lap on the sofa. Killer dogs my a**e!!!

Thanks Cave Canem- it took me ages to work out the easy ones, like OH and YO :) Ive no hope if its got 4 initials!!

Off topic, but you're not alone, you should try figuring it out when English isn't your first language, although it is probably useless when it comes to horsey-world words like YO = Yard Owner, I can recommend using this site http://www.urbandictionary.com/ for other combinations like PMSL, just type in the letters in the search box at the top of the page, press search and, using PMSL as example, you get http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=PMSL .

On topic, I think Dobermans are beautiful, the photos on this thread makes me go .

I've owned one crossbreed that was mainly Doberman, with a little bit of Riesenschnauzer in her, sadly she is the reason why I don't intend to ever buy another crossbreed in my life. She was my second dog, and I didn't know half as much about dogs as I thought I knew, I now wouldn't have touched her with a barge pole, classical it is a crossbreed therefore you don't need to health tests the parents blah blah blah. Due to both mental and health problems, we had to euthanise her when she was barely 2 years old, but besides that I loved her, she taught me so much, and since she was a crossbreed, the breeder hadn't bothered with docking the puppies, so she had a full tail, or karate tail as we called it, because it chopped off numerous house plants that was in the right/wrong height.

Mackenzie6, if you do intend to stand your dog at stud, be sure to get the necessary health checks done first- hipps, eyes, heart and VWD,
And it would be good to get some sort of working quals- the special dobermann one (after the BH companion dog) is the ZTP test.

I deal with quite a few Dobes through work and can honestly say I have never had a bad one come in. I don't find them particularly dominant or difficult to handle and the vast majority have been rather sensitive souls that would have been ruined by harsh treatment. I'm very glad they're not particularly fashionable at the moment, far too nice a breed to be owned by posturing idiots :)

I'd not heard of the ZTP, found a great video of a lovely dog (bearing in mind I know nothing about dobes:p), the tests looks like a mix of BH and IP).

Hi ,
yes it goes without saying. I wouldn't invest in importing a dog with this breeding for stud purposes without the various health tests.

I personally dont think i would have a british bred dobe unless i rescued it as would so many breeders.

Thanks

MM loved the video and it looked a lovely dog.

OP why are you going to breed your bitch? as I said there are loads in rescue. My lovely Fred was a rescue from the breeder, he was European bred and her bitch had a dozen pups,, she had homes lined up for 9 but in desperation she rang a breed rescue and got a rocket for her troubles. After this she spayed her bitch which had won in the show ring and she bred because she wanted a pup.

The thing is with these Eastern European bred dogs they are too sharp for the average owner which is why I think the English ones have been dumbed down for the pet market. My Fred was returned to his breeder because he had bitten someone and was a nightmare at first but became my dog of a lifetime.

Lovely dogs and I considered one in the past but again, my dog flap is too small :D

As for 'savage breed'....ummmmmm try telling that to my old yard owners one who used to sit between my legs when I was stood up talking and gaze lovingly up at me....soft as butter!

I love dobies. My grandparents had a lovely liver bitch that had been originally trained by the Police for sniffer work but failed the test for choosing to eat a pillow rather than find the bait.
as toddlers we'd clamber all over her, and treat her as our pony and fight to get to hold her lead on walks.
By contrast at the same time my grandparents had a jrt that none of us could control on the lead and we all learnt pretty sharpish that she was not for playing or cuddling!
In fact she used to start all the fights in the park and then run and cower behind the dobie who then got blamed for being the instigator!
Currently 3 at my yard and although rather standoffish they are as good as gold with the horses and visitors once they've been introduced!
