The harsh reality. ... She is fat and on a diet.....

obviously limiting grazing....but i feel so guilty!!!!!

She stands there on her little balding paddock looking up the field at the other horses grazing away....and they seem to eat loads and not put on anything.....

She has a ball, and a trickle feeder ball and gets fed a few carrots.. and let out for proper grazing a few hours a day.... but still..... Does anyone suffer with this guilt.... its torture!!!!

Its at home, everytime i look out the window or drive past she looks sooooo depressed.... I cant take any more!!!!

YES! I feel so sorry for our boy when he stands at the gate, looking from his diet patch into the big green field the skinnies are in. Wish we could put your horse and mine together!

Same here. We have a massive field and he is on a bit fenced off. I've tried grazing muzzles but he just tries to decapitate himself on the fence trying to get them off. I've tried stabling but he gets so stressed being separated from his fieldmate and hates his stable. No other choice but a fatty paddock. I totally sympathise with you, stick at it, she will be ok.

You should feel pleased you are tackling her weight. If you want some suggestions she may feel better out with her mates with a muzzle on and it will let her trickle feed too which is good for her. Also I would cut the carrots and all hard feed of any kind. You can add supplements to soaked hay. Get the exercise up too. It is much the same as a human diet you feel better if you are getting exercise and seeing people. Hope it goes well it will be worth it.

My cob is a little tubby but not FAT FAT and my little welsh has cushings so im now super strict when it comes to the spring grass...both had their muzzles reintroduced and on today for 8 hours...i had desperate looks and pleading eyes as they stood by the fencing watching me leave but i WILL beat them to the spring grass! cruel to be kind...neither of mine could deal with box rest so i have option other than being the mean mum:o

At least i am not alone!! In future i will think twice about giving cobs and good doers a home!! For my own sanity!! lol

. I provide a trickle ball (few hi fibre nuts and herballs) and few carrots to 'break' the day up. Are carrots fattening?! Maybe thats where im going wrong!!
- Or when i turn her out for a few hours she eats like a mad woman with cakes in front of her!??? I bought a paddock ball.... she looks at it and doesnt want to play. I got a herbal paddock lick... that was gone in no time, literally a day so thought that cant be too good for her eating like 5kg of lick in a day!!!

Maybe muzzle is the way forward for when she in 'normal' field.... i will give it a go!! Do they rub?? They look so uncomfortable!!

She cant be ridden unfortuantly though.

My other horse is a 'string bean' - he would lose far too much being in with her so he is the other side of the fence scoffing like a piglet :-/ Perhaps i should get a shetland as they notoriously also need to be in the good old starvation paddock too!. .( Good excuse to have to invest in a little cutey too :-))

i dream for the day i have a horse who needs grass to fill them up and not blow up like a barge. Despite the initial grumpy 'ur sooo MEAN' faces when having their muzzles clipped on in the morning, my 2 are happier staying with their friends than in a seperate bare paddock. My 2 are in greenguards, little one had his on 24/7 last year and it didnt rub but i covered straps in vet wrap. Cob wore shires bucket muzzle and it rubbed his nose by the end of the summer but he's testing a greenguard this year, as it keeps his nostrils clear. Mine are currently in them from about 8am to 3ish so far and will increase gradually 2 24/7 just to make a dent in their greediness. *touch wood* they are doing well so far:D Cob sulked for the 1st 2 days, laid down and went on strike, stood in the bush and sulked but after long enough he obviously got fed up and worked out he could still eat:rolleyes:
