Porky Ponies!

I've just caught up with this thread again so this is how I'm managing mine at the mo.

Due to being on a rota at work, when I'm not working I tend to ride 5 times a week, mainly hacking with 1-2 hills, only 1 decent hill though locally to play with! I try and get in some decent trot on the bridleway but the ground is very hard this way at the moment. This is interspersed with an hour long lesson about every 2-3 weeks. At the moment in my lessons we're making use of a jumping paddock and I'm finding the exercise required for jumping seems to help trim him up quite well. If I'm working, unfortunately my riding drops down to about 2-3 times a week as I get back too late.

Diet wise - he's out during the day from about 8.30am to 6.30pm, stabled at night - and the days I ride it's sometimes for less time than that. The yard doesn't offer restricted grazing and due to where the fields are and size of the herd he's out with I'm reluctant to use a muzzle for safety reasons. Overnight he has one slice of hay soaked, a handful of Top Spec Top Chop with a breathing supplement in it, half a carrot, and I have some equibite vitamin & mineral biscuit type things which I give him a few of occasionally.

On the weightape he's about 413kg if not more at the moment and my ideal choice of weight for him would be about 398kg. This must have been the first winter I didn't manage to get his weight down to below 400kg - I think because we had restricted turnout and the haylage when in which is what we have during the winter was very good quality. So he started the summer with already carrying extra weight. Don't know what it is about this year so far but only now am I seeing a tiny bit of weight loss since they moved onto the summer fields 2 months ago. Normally I am able to let him have some turnout 24/7 in the summer but not risking it yet this year.

Well done to those of you who have got such good amounts of weight off already, it's giving the rest of us hope and hints and tips how to get there!

Melly is a very grumpy girl today!! Her hay is now being double netted to try and slow her down a bit...I hate to think of her snaffling it all in half an hour and then standing for hours with nothing! She has ripped her net off the wall twice today, and barged her pen gate and bent it because she was spitting her dummy out...anyone got any advice as how to slow her down but still give her enough? Can you soak straw? I cant give dry as she has copd....why do I always end up with broken ponies!!!????

Can I join too? I have a fat 14hh hairy cob who is out in short grass and is only being fed after he is ridden so I can get some salt into him - he gets 1/2 round scoop Falcon Fibre Care.
He is ridden 3 or 4 times a week, hacking, hill work and mainly flat work with the occasional jump. He is fairly fit despite the weight - he did 1 1/2 hours XC yesterday and was up for a gallop at the end still! Will weigh him when I get down the yard later.

Sammy, the day he arrived
about 537kg according to tape

And currently (sorry, it's a ridden one so ti's not exactly very easy to compare, but think you get the gist)

I always think he looks heavier with tack on...hmm

my 20 year old is on the large side. she was on a 10 acre field all winter (no rugs) and she is like a balloon!
moved her home onto our field (which has practically nil grass) and shes on hay now. started to bring her into work!!

heyy

yes you can soak straw, my friend has a recovering lamintic and she mixes straw and hay together and soakes it for 24 hours

Can I be in too? Spring is just starting here in New Zealand and Ive just halved the size of Peewees field so soon He'll be giving me dirty looks when his field is bare and he claims hes starving to death inspite of the big fat belly.
Hes a 10hh shetland timor cross whos foundered in the past so I have to be really strict but I feel rotten for him.
Maybe I should half the size of my fridge as an act of support? He might not appreciate it but my next horse will!

Months later...at start of October and I'm finally shifting some weight. He's gone down to about 400kg and hoping I can get off some more before they go onto haylage and are stabled at night in the winter in about 4 weeks time.

October report for Sammy -

we're still struggling a bit with weight and I'm beginning to wonder if there's a metabolism issue?!

Currently the work load is about 4-5 days per week - schooling for up to an hour most of that time. Have introduced galloping as part of the weekly regime (either after schooling session or as it's own session) now that the stubble fields are available. Hacking is sort of a now - and - then type thing as it's getting too dark by the itme I'm home from work - so mainly weekends if there's no show/dressage on.

Weight has stabilised between 483kg and 490kg on the weight tape. He has been fully clipped, and is stabled in a light weight rug at night and a rain sheet during the day (and temps are dropping). I must be the only person in this hemisphere thats still muzzling in October.

Feedwise - he gets a 5kg net at night, in doubled small holed nets. I was soaking it but to be honest, it's got too time/labor intensive and I'm getting hassled about the water consumption and dumping of effluent from YOs. In his bucket he gets a large scoop of Dengie Good Doer, am and pm, supplements and a small half scoop of balancer am and pm and a wee drop of speedi-beet. Horse needs some oomph so am going to introduce some oats (stamina is up, fitness is up, but not quite enough go-power).

My 14hh welsh CxD is abit big but got artheritus so cant do too much work and so dose our 14.3hh cob. My 16.3hh irish sport horse is on a strict diet and in full work and not dropping grrrr

Phillip finally has his muzzle off. I'm back at uni so he's not being worked but is down to 570kg which is good for going into winter :D he's still 'fat' by regular terms but he drops through winter, I don't like hard feeding unless he needs it.

I am late in joining this thread, but feel I need to join to monitor both my ponies.

Pea-

He's a 14.3hh, Dalesx other breeds. He had an injury last summer and had 6months of and in light walking. Then spend winter bringing him back to fitness. This summer he was in full work. But I never managed to get his weight off from the year before.

He is exercised 6days a week. Schooled 45min to an hour 2-3times a week, 1 lunge, hacked the rest. Have recently started jumping again and will be jumping once a week throughout winter. Days off will be walked in hand 10mins pm.

He is clipped fully with half a head and legs on. Has a combo light weight in field and a fleece during the day and a light combo at night.

He is turned out for 4-5hours am and can't be muzzled as becomes very aggressive and unhappy.
He has his hay in small holed double nets and soaked for 1hour. I feed him 1 handful of Alfa A lite, Balieys Lo Cal 1cup each feed and 1cup comp mix (for energy) pm feed only.

Red- 13.2hh, Welsh D.

She is fully clipped with half a head and legs on. In the field has a light rain sheet and either naked (mean, but always hot) or summer sheet during the day. Night has a light weight stable or fleece.

She is turned out for 4-5hours am witha grazing muzzle on. For the last week comes off for one hour a day.
She has a small holed nets and soaked for 1-2hours. She is feed 1 handful of Alfa A lite each feed, 1cup Ballieys LoCal each feed and 1cup Cool Mix pm feed.
