hi there.

my boyfriend is thinking about branching into making portable cross country fences. unlike the ones that you usually see, which are 'portable' because they are light (but you still have to lug them around!), these will have wheels underneath which can be raised and lowered, so that you can place them sturdily on the ground for jumping, and then lift up, for easy wheeling - anywhere you like!

what do you think to this idea? how much would you expect to pay for fences (the usual - tiger traps, tyres, log roll, bench/chair, pheasant feeder etc etc)?
also, are there any fences in particular you would like???

and how much interest do you think they would get??

any feedback would be GREAT! thanks.

Sounds like a great idea, as portables sometimes aren't very portable ie they are v heavy and only are easily moved by small tractor.
There is a local company to us who make a really good corner fence. It comes in 2 sections, a top and a bottom. They can be used seperately at about 1ft and 2ft, or placed on top of each other to give a bigger fence, and are easily liftable with rope handles. That would be the type of fence I would buy if I was only buying one.
Sorry - have no ideas about pricing though, would be interested to hear what others think.
Good luck!

Id personally be very interested....... could use in schools in winter and out in fields in spring.

If i was to buy id look at more tricky things to practice at home.........ie corners and arrowheads ....... but would also be interested in the likes of chairs etc....

No real idea on prices myself........ cheap as poss my bank blance says lol!!!

Think this is a great idea especially if you hire them out and deliver them! Think people will buy them to school over at home, plus clubs and competition yards.

Think they'd work out pricey due to timber costs plus the hours to make. That's why Riding Clubs and yards use tyres/barrels etc because they're cheap or free and easy to handle. A lot of BE events use portables so I would think there's a market for them.

Is it possible to make a portable fence with several different faces? i'e that can be a log roll or chair for instance with just a few parts added? Or that one fence can be made bigger or smaller with ease? Something like that to make it different from everything else on the market perhaps??

Sounds a good idea to me. My yard are considering putting a few xc fences in our big field and these would have to be portable as it is also our main summer grazing. These would be just the sort we would be looking for

It's a good idea, it has been done, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't also do it - after all, there's more than one brand of toothpaste!
However, he should approach it like any other business - have a look at the grilling people get on the 'dragon's den' and imagine him in front of them - it's about marketing a product that people think they want at a price they think they are prepared to pay - and getting it to them - thats the bottom line.
How about, for instance, developing a set of trolley wheels, sort of like a railway porter's trolley, that you stick under one end of the jump and jack up, lock and fit to the towbar of a landrover, and another for the back end - that way you have a product that works for loads of jumps, is easy to use, easy to make in bulk, easy to get to market and well within everyone's budget - and will work for jumps people already have.
And when he has made his millions, please remember where you heard it first!
Actually the example is just to illustrate that it may pay to think outside the box - identify the problem - he's done that - now come up with a really good solution that hasn't ben done (or at least done well) before!
Just a thought!
