Hi all just wondering if anyone keeps a horse/rides in Portsmouth? I may be moving down there towards the end of the year and possible will be looking for a loan/share/riding school. What's the horsey scene like there? From what I can tell there aren't any riding schools in Portsmouth but Crofton Manor is close...

I'm at Uni down here, it's not a particularly horsey area. The Uni go to Crofton for all their riding stuff, but other than that I can't really think of anywhere else particularly close! I think you'd probably have to head more towards the Chichester/Winchester area!

Ohh that sucks, hopefully will have a car by then though! Ive got a (conditional) place at Portsmouth for September, would be grateful for any info on the uni before I firm my place :D most importantly, what's the riding club like ;)

Personally I wouldn't livery a horse at Crofton but that's just my opinion. Good for competitions and stuff though but rubbish hacking as it is on a VERY busy main road. Plus the stables are small and grazing very limited in the winter, not sure about the summer.

There are lots of little yards around that area and if you head for the Titchfield area there are one or two good bridle paths (that go down to the beach) and round Warsash Common that you can also join up for a long ride.

It is actually a very horsey area (I've had horses round here for over 30 years)!

Depends where at crofton you livery. There are 2 yards run separately - the DIY and the part/full. It's tricky as the DIY stables are small with big fields but turnout is very restricted in winter and daily in summer, and the part/full which I'm on has 12x12 boxes and turnout is relatively unrestricted all year (though not 24/7) but the fields are small and are hayed all year round.
