Back in the day, my horses were always delighted with half a scabby apple or a slice of bread. But now I'm feeling a little inadequate!

I've just come back into horse ownership after a 3 year break, and I'm stunned at the vast array of posh horse treats available! Pecan and honey nibbles, apple 'flavoured' treats and other such items. What I want to know is, are these treats beneficial? Or are they just sweeties for horses, bad for them but ok for an odd treat? What do you treat your hairies with?

Off the track a little, a livery friend of mine has a 22 year old ex tv/stunt horse who will do anything for irn-bru FROM THE CAN! Terrible I know, I know, but I figure she's got to 22 with good teeth, why burst her bubble? (She also sits on command :D)

Mine get fruit & veg as treats ;) They're quite partial to parsnips, brocolli and apples but Comet's not overly fussed on carrots. For christmas and birthdays they get packets of polos and Lincoln horse biccies (they usually have lincoln advent calenders):D Ooo and I have been known to pop them Likits on occasions (if I haven't eaten them myself ;)) Neither of them look any worse for it!

I do not however feed them human junk food such as chips, crisps, chocolate, ice cream etc etc. I know quite a few primarily children who do but I'm proud to say when they fed Comet chocolate he spat it out ;)

i used to have a horse that would drink coke from a can and he would try to follow people at shows who had a can!

My horses get Badminton High Fibre Nuggets as treats, they come in big bags and are much cheaper than the small bags of treats. The horses love them.

I always have extra strong mints in my pockets...need shares in the company! They all have carrots and apples if they deserve it (which is most of the time:) My lovely riding horse however has a penchant for Werthers...I know I know...but I always have one when I ride as I get a dry mouth and he has caught on :) absolutely adores them. However I have never come accross any of my horses that actually like and will eat the 'new fangled treats!! Mine get fed Badminton High Fibre Nuggets as a staple part of their diet.
I did own a TB who loved orange lollies and would lick them on the stick :) :)

Carrots, apples, pears, neeps, the odd raspberry or strawberry, and juice in a syringe when worming. He'll suck the juice out of orange slices, too, and then drops them. He likes prawn crackers too. He will eat crisps, chips, ham sandwiches, and cheeseburgers if they are within range, but I try to keep them out of range! He's been known to grab a 2L coke bottle from under someone's arm and upend it, but thankfully is was a) empty and b) closed at the time.

He doesn't get a huge pile of treats. Half a carrot when bringing in/turning out is the norm. In my little clicker-training attempts, I use pellets of his supplement.

my horse will eat horse treats but his favourite things in the world are crisps/coke/chocolate and ice lollys ! he broke into the gaitor once and ate a whole bag of prawn crackers too....dont get my wrong he doesnt get human food all the time but a little bit of my snack doesnt harm him ! i cant give him likkits as he puuls it off the wall and eats it in one go !

I was eating hulahoops and my mare demanded to try them. She did the 'sooking/head bopping/spitting out' of the crisps lol
