Looking for tips and advice for getting started with positive reinforcement training, I have a thoroughbred mare who has been through some less-than-ideal handling at a previous home. As a result she can be rather anxious and always expects to be told off so she will start the fight first. I haven’t done positive reinforcement training before but I think it’s something she might respond well to and could help her to build trust and confidence. She’s currently out of work recovering from an injury so ridden work is not on the cards at the moment. Does anyone have any tips, advice or can recommend any really good books to help me get started?

I have a Ben Hart book on clicker training. Even though I don't use a clicker I found it a really good primer to positive reinforcement, behaviour shaping plans etc. He explains everything very clearly.

I did the IH horse psychology course some years ago and one handy thing they do in that is get you to try to teach someone to do something, e.g go over to the corner and put on a hat, by just saying yes. Really highlights the importance of your timing.

Shawna Corrin Karrasch Is phenomenal. She’s in America, used to come over for clinics but now has a home base that she works from, I went to a demo with her very sceptically, then promptly booked clinic slots for the next three days for my big boy. She is fantastic. There’s loads of you tube and videos etc- I don’t do as much of it as I should now, I use it as a winter boredom breaker instead of lunging to keep their brains occupied.
