My boy is on box rest 'til spring. Gutting but I have found some positives.

Complete control of his food intake. No worries of autumn grass flush and fear of laminitis. I can keep his weight steady. No going through electric fences to get at fresh grass.

No wading about in mud which we both hate. No mud fever. I also have a clean pony, not that he cares.

No worry about which rug to put on, will it rain or not, turn very cold or not.

He is in the dry and with his own winter coat and unless it turns really cold doesn't need a rug. Maybe a fleece overnight in zero temperatures.

I spend lots of time with him. Luckily he seems content even after 6 weeks being in, with an amble round the yard daily.

If you have a horse who is content enough on box rest, it's great for a bit of friendship building.

My pony is in at the mo and despite having never to my knowledge been stabled, she is coping well and seems happy. I hate the fact that she is poorly but loving spending loads of time with her. She gets soooo much pampering and is getting more and more like a puppy every day. She is a complete mud hound so I am also delighted to see her clean and sparkly.

She has also developed a love of Radio 2!

Mine is on box rest at the moment, and I was very glad last night when I arrived at the yard late and didn't have to walk to the field. It was dark and cold and sooooo foggy that you couldn't see more than a few yards.

However my joy was short lived when I saw the state of her stable......

How the heck am I supposed to keep her bed full and deep and dry and right up to the door when she poos and walks straight through it and stirs it into her bedding before scraping some of the bedding up and kicking it to the back of the stable????? ARGH!
