My horse was lame last week but recovered within a day or so. He is now very lame on one front foot. Can't feel or see any heat or swelling. Oddly he was sound coming in from field other night but then lame in the morning.
Spoke to vet on phone today as they were very stretched due to weather and she said maybe an absess. Due to weather farrier won't be out till least Monday. What should i do? Should i poultice even tho he has shoe on??? Should he stay in???

Yes, poultice. If you can then wrap the hoof securely in something completely waterproof..lots of plastic and gaffer tape..I'd put him out, the abscess gunk is more likely to come out if the horse is moving about.

Its a matter of what i can get a hold of as we have had really bad snow so no where really open to get anything. I have that animalentix stuff, some nappies and maybe some gaffer tape. Do i need to soak the wrap in anything or just hot water. Will the absess come out even with a shoe on??
My fields are very frozen and rutted and deep in snow hence why i was wondering about putting him out

soak 2- 3 times a day if poss in hot water and Epsom salts, keep doing this until the abscess shows its ugly head, tap on the foot with a hoof pick, if a particular area is sensitive that's probably where the abscess is brewing, then poultice the foot changing regularly and soak as much as poss.
Its always best to keep the horse moving rather than box rest as all this will do is cause the leg to fill and it will burst much quicker if its turned out.
once its burst soak keep poulticing and soakin until every last bit of gunk has come out and the pad is clean when you take it off.
then you should dry poultice twice daily until the hole as closed up so no dirt gets in, otherwise you'll be back to square on again. I find squirting a bit of contact lense solution into the hole works wonders for killing any nasties in there.
Good Luck!

to make a poultice first soak the animalintex or nappy in hot water then hold in place with vet wrap then wrap around loads n loads of duct tape. it will probably stay on better if your fields frozen rather than in boggy mud. it will only come out if the abscess is not located under the shoe, if it is you will probably need the shoe removing.
