I think my poor mare has an abscess - when I checked her Thursday evening she was not happy putting weight on her near fore and had slight swelling in the tendon. I decided to give her some bute and spoke to the vet yesterday who said it sounded very much like an abscess. She has had two poultices on and the Farrier is coming out this weekend to check her foot for me but has said do not give her any more bute as he needs to know exactly where the problem is. She seems much happier today but I am concerned about how much pain she will be in when the bute wears off. Is there anything else anyone can recommend to make her more comfortable until he has been out to see her.

Maybe someone else will comment, but I am not sure that swelling/heat in the tendon area is symptomatic of an abscess, but I assume you discussed this in more detail with the vet.

The farrier has been out and it is definitely an abscess. After taking the shoe off and paring the hoof back pus came out. I did hot tub the foot and have been told to hot poultice for three days and then dry poultice for two and he will come back out and check her. Thanks for your responses.
