Hi hoping for some advice please. I had a pony vetted for my daughter and the vet told me she has a cyst on her face. It’s the size of a pea black and very hard. He thinks it’s a cyst but would obviously need a biopsy to check. I’m presuming I may have to have cyst removed if it grows anyway but I’m now really nervous in case it’s something more sinister. I already have 2 greys both with melanoma’s. What are your thoughts? Pony only 6. Would it start off as a black hard pea shape?

I'd investigate and get a biopsy. It could be anything.

A friends horse had a lump on her face, it turned out that it was wire off a dental tool used by an EDT. I know another horse that had lump on its cheek and it was a tooth that had grown outwards into the cheek.

P.S I'm looking to buy another horse and I'm dead set against buying a grey for the very reason you have found - melanomas.

I'd want it removed and biopsy done, I'm afraid . Black and very hard doesn't sound like any cyst I've ever come across, but some sarcoids are like that.

My first thought was sarcoid too given the firmness. I’d want that investigated and either dealt with or it seriously reflected in the price (assuming it turns out to be something you feel you can deal with?).
ETA: also consider how it might affect your insurance- bought my horse with a small sarcoid (since disappeared), the whole of his skin is excluded on that basis! ?‍♀️
