thank you shady - i just feel so sad to have lost him - he was the most beautiful boy. his sister is constantly with me and although she saw that he was gone is still listening to see if she can hear him. i was wondering about getting a kitten for her - do you have any experience?
Lots of experience and I know how hard this time is for you and his sister. I always buy/rescue in pairs and if they are very bonded it can be incredibly upsetting for them when one dies. Not always , as all are different and some just adjust quickly , depending on the life they have, but for those who struggle after a sibling loss I would say see how she is in a few more days/week and if you still feel she would beneifit from a friend and you yourself would lke another cat in the house, I would get her a kitten . I say kitten because it can be much more problamatic bringing in an adult in terms of territory invasion, whereas a kitten is usually initially seen as a wtf is that doing in my house and is then more readily excepted.(there are always exceptions)
I would go for a male , but that's a personal choice. I would also go for the cuddliest one you can find who immediately wants interaction . Skittish kittens are harder work and in many cases the personality is mostly in place at 8-10 weeks . Depending on your views , you might want to consider a purebreed as certain races are more like dogs in their devotion to their owner and feline companion. I always have the mad Orientals as the bulk of my cat family , but something like a British, Persian or Ragdoll would bring a wonderful, loving presence into your life.
Lots to concider , but take your time to recover from the loss of Jerry. Go and have a cuppa with Birker. She comes across as a lovely caring person, and all us cat peeps are here as well .x

thank you shady - i will leave it a week or so and see how she is - he was always there to reassure her if she thought something was scary. she has definitely been more jumping without him around. she does tend to react and then ask questions later - he was rather more laid back - although he was absolutely terrified of the dreaded vacuum. if i do get her a friend - i had already thought a male kitten would be the best way to go - you have just confirmed what i though. i will indeed go and see Birker at the weekend - i can confirm she is a lovely person.

So sorry about Jerry, FIP is absolutely vile, at least he slipped away in his home environment where he is safe

Shady has mentioned Ragdolls and British as potential new cats - we have one of each! Both are very affectionate (I think linked to being house cats) but my heart will always be with the ragdoll breed. My parents have 2 and it was instantly the breed I wanted when I'd moved out. Their character is absolutely wonderful. The one thing with them though, is they aren't supposed to go out free roaming as they don't sense danger (mine definitely doesn't, the number of times she's appeared right in my path as I'm chopping something with a sharp knife....)

I'm really sorry - I saw your post when he was first poorly and was very much hoping he'd pull through. 7 is no age - very sad *hugs*
Thank you SEL - he was a very special boy, who has left an enormous jerry shaped hole in our lives - he was always with us and loved to cuddle

thank you. I have got to finish some exam board marking and then i will start to look for a new kitten - i think margo will appreciate having some company - shady seems to agree with my instinct of having a little boy.

I lost my middle girl Blue aged 17 about a month ago, she and her sister Sparkle (18) were a bonded pair and although the first week was awful with lots of howling she has settled down now so they do adapt. While I don’t think I would add a kitten to an 18 year old Margo is young enough to have a new brother.

i agree lindylouanne - i don't think an older cat would enjoy having company, as you say she is still young - she races round the house at high speed - she was always far more energetic than jerry - he was much more laid back - except with his little Pets at home woollen mouse with a bell on it's tail - loved those to death!!! she is definitely missing his reassurance that everything is ok. i have also notice how much less cat food i am getting through - even right at the end he had a tremendous appetite - he loved food

Thank you, I still have Sebastian to keep her company, he’s a youngster at 15 🤣 Being pedigree cats I’m amazed the 3 girls all got to 17 and Sparkle looks amazing for her age. Love to you and the Grems xx
