Sam is 8 years old and a German Shepherd.
Last Friday he came staggering into the bedroom and was leaning on the bed as he walked. He then turned to leave the room and was leaning on the wall as he went. Out in the hall he collapsed. By the time I got to him, we got him standing upright. When walking he crossed his legs and was staggering but it quickly passed and he returned to "normal". We phoned the vet and got an afternoon appointment.
A checkup was done but due to him panting, generally being stressy and whining the vet struggled to hear his heart properly. They talked us through the possibilities of what it could be and we opted for a full blood works. Everything came back normal except kidney enzymes were high. A urine sample was put in next day and came back fine.
Sam has been back to himself since.

The heart blood test came back today as it had to be sent off. A normal sample is 900 and his is 1283. Muscle stress and a murmur are 2 things that were mentioned as maybes. The vet that does the scans is on holiday for 2 weeks so he is booked in for a scan on the 27th.

Has anyone had anything similar?

Nothing similar but our dog has an arrhythmia and has ECGs and ECHO scans regularly, they aren't very stressful for the dog. Ours took her zebra with her and actually seemed to enjoy her short trip.

Has this happened before or was it a one off? Lots of things it could be: heart, lungs (I know of a dog that had episodes of collapse and turned out to be lungworm), some sort of seizure? In an older German shepherd I would also be considering sudden spinal/hip/stifle pain.

Crazymare - Thanks for letting me know of your experience. This is a huge scary unknown for me so anything is useful. Unfortuntely nothing distracts Sam. He loves tennis balls and kongs but he will ignore them in certain situations - such as being in the vets.
Umbongo - thanks for your reply. It was a one-off. He is fairly fit as he does agility. Until this happened there has been nothing to suggest any pain and when I happened I felt him all over and there were no pain reactors (I know this does not always mean anything). Will look at lungworm. Seizure was mentioned by vet but she thought it unlikely as he was composed, wasn't unaware of his surroundings/fully alert as soon as it passed. His head wasn't tilted/eyes rolling etc. (I don't think I'm explaining this part too well but hope you get the jist).
