Ive been asked if I want a horse to loan who used to be on an old yard. There was some query over whether he could do any jumping, but now he can so thats been sorted Im not sure what to do. I want my own horse tbh. He seems a nice horse but I cant afford to loan him and look for another horse.

I think you have answered your question in what you posted. You do not want a loan horse but want a horse of your own. Just explain this politely to whoever offered you the horse and look for one to buy. Good luck with your search for a horse.

but then should I take him on part loan? but not sure of costs etc. and whether i could afford to whilst looking for another horse.

Just be 100% honest with the person offering the loan and take it from there.

Who knows it could work out really well for you if you help get the horse fit - you may decide it is something you can offer a home to - or not, but whatever you do don't 'use' the loanee, it isn't fair to the horse or to your reputation!!

Many horses are OK to jump once they are fit - the reason they go lame is because people don't take the time to get them fit enough. Again, something to discuss with the owner.

Have you had one of your own before? Would this horse be a good introduction to owning and why overlook a horse that may well be better than anything on the market? I have loaned both ways and found every single one of benefit, help and pleasure to all concerned. Thing about loan horses is they are often too good and well thought of to be sold, unlike many horses given false descriptions and with undisclosed medical issues...
