Hi,
I’ve got a 32 year old TB x who very suddenly about a month ago was continually stamping and kicking out with one back leg, it literally came from nowhere. We think she’d been doing it all night and got herself all worked up and was really wobbly from exhaustion and was in a bit of a state. Given her age We immediately called the vets who came out and said it wasn’t typical in presentation but the easiest thing to rule out was leg mites so she had a dectomax injection, Some flamazine as she has some scabbing around the fetlock and some coatex shampoo. She was immediately much better by the next day, we religiously put the cream on and washed her legs every couple of days. When the vet came back for the second injection all the scabs had gone and she was really happy with her. It’s 2 weeks tomorrow since the second dectomax and yesterday she was suddenly stamping loads again, not as bad as first time but stamping loads. I checked her over and beneath her fetlock was all crusty again with scabs. I shampooed her and put flamazine on yesterday and this morning all the scabs had softened so I’ve removed most of them and the skin is looking nice beneath. She isn’t stamping today. I’m just wondering is a second round of dectomax my only solution for if the mites are still there? I’m baffled as to why she’s suddenly got them as we’ve owned her 24 years and she’s never had anything like this before and she doesn’t have any feather and it’s only leg? But there’s deffo something bothering her. Any ideas? Thanks

I would say the scabs being itchy is more likely to be the reason. I use cetraben on my lads scabby bits and it helps. You can also just use a large dog flea treatment if you’re worried about mites..dectomax is not the greatest at treating any possible mites.

Thanks, I’m just at a loss as to why she’s suddenly got these scabby areas. They’re on like the back of her fetlock/heel area but only the one leg. The flamazine is doing a good job at softening them up so I can remove but we’ve obviously not got to the root cause as they’ve come straight back.
Is there a particular flea treatment that you’d recommend? I know I used frontline spray in the past for my old cob but I don’t think they make that anymore? Thanks

I used frontline spray on mine got for £24 online somewhere 2/3 squirts per hock and dock of tail, followed up 2 weeks later with another head and shoulder leg wash to soften and remove scabs and seems to have worked but needs keeping on top of as other horses on yard not treated

For common or garden heel mites, a good scrub in Selsun 2.5% shampoo on day 1, day 5 and day 10 clears mites, hatchlings, and the dead skin that they feed on. If you are in a harvest mite area, then I am not sure whether this routine would work or not.
