Hiya all

What do you think the best form or treatment can be..? heard about a wash for them and an injection by the vet.... any other ideas..?

My traditional cob has started stamping his legs now the weather has got wetter and muddier so we are thinking to get his legs done just incase.

any ideas/suggestions for the best remedies - Thanks ...x

I inject Dectomax 3 x a year, kills the mites and keeps them at bay!! It also worms them for you. It's only fair to warn you that it's not licensed for use in horses - only sheep and cattle, but then Ivermectin and Frontline aren't licensed for equine use either!)
Dectomax isn't to be confused with Ivermectin injection that the vets give (you need 2 of these about 10 days apart = expensive with call out fees etc!)
Other options include Frontline spray. It works well but I had to clip my boy's feathers (*sob) to really get it in there. :(
Pig Oil and Sulphur is good, but more preventative than a cure.

A friend of mine had this problem with his horse & found the cheapest remedy was from the Pet Shop. A wash they sell for dogs. He uses it every year now as soon as the mites start & it solves it for him.

Hiya all

My traditional cob has started stamping his legs now the weather has got wetter and muddier so we are thinking to get his legs done just incase.

If this has only just started happening it could be mites. Or do you think he might have the start of mud fever if it is since the wet and mud? Several horses we know have come down with MF these last few days, one quite severely already.

Just a thought.

My boy started stamping his back legs and I thought it might be mites. He does not have feathers. Anyway while delving about down there I thought his sheath ponged a bit so cleaned it out. Voila no leg stamping!!!

He must have been quite uncomfortable!

I bought a cob with very thick & dense feather, he was stamping, scratching and rubbing, very unhappy about playing host to these uninvited guests. I injected him with Dectamax, it did not work which surprised me as I have used it on heavies with 100% success rate for years, there have been reports of resistance.
I used an ivermectin sheep wormer, Oramec £17 for a litre, put some gloves on and thoroughly soaked each leg and rubbed it in, going back to each leg repeatedly until I could be fairly sure there were no untreated areas.
It worked really well, gave significant relief to the horse and he has been happy for several weeks with no stamping. I will repeat the process again soon before winter sets in.
Obviously, this product is not licenced for horses, it should never be given orally to equines and you may want to run it by your vet before you try it!

to keep mine free of mites, he has his feathers off every 8weeks and then spray with a dog flea/mite spray which works. He did have the jab from vets and dermoline shampoo as he was in a state (within a couple of days of stamping). Cleared them up and now clipping washing once a week/fortnight and then flea spray works. Be aware they live in bedding so if you start to kill them however you do it if he has been in clean stable out completely after couple days of beginning treatment to stop the bedding harveting them!!

Umm, be careful of Pig Oil & Sulphur if your horse has got white legs and/or sensitive skin. I used it on mine and he came up all horrible and pink, and his feet were all hot! Poor lad, I washed it all off with tea tea shampoo; but someone else on this forum (thanks!) suggested patch testing first - it was probably the sulphur that did it.
