Possible move to Derbyshire - Help!

Husband has job offer in Derby and will be starting later this year. We know nothing about the area and won't rush into anything - so I'll stay put and still work and keep my horse in Norfolk for now.

Can anyone recommend livery yards with good facilities and excellent hacking. I like dressage and a bit of showing. An indoor school would be fab. All a bit scary as I know my home area so well and can avoid the pitfalls!
 
Hi, derbyshire is great!!! Do you know which side/area you will be and then I could point you in a few livery directions - its a very horsey area so you will settle in well!
 
No idea yet! Not sure wether to look for stables first and then a home! Just trying to get a feel for the area. Husband will be at RR in Derby but really prefer living out of the city. (is Derby a city?)
 
I live in Belper which is about 8miles out of Derby. It's a nice area, lots of horsey people! Unfortunately good yards are lacking in my opinion around this area! But I guess it depends what you want.
 
What type of livery will you be looking for? There are some great full and part livery yards in the nice parts of south Derbyshire. Also, Derby is very close to east Staffordshire which again has some lovely villages and livery yards. I can give a run down on most yards in these areas so please pm me if you'd like more info :)
 
I'd advise that you try to look at the villages that run along the A50, that way you'll have masses of choice regarding good yards as you'll be on the main road to anywhere basically.

Coming near to me then :), wondering what you call good hacking, I love where I am for the hacking as I can get practically anywhere and get the full mix, so need to be good in traffic for certain sections.
 
Another RR person then, my hubby (like most of derby lol) is there! You will be pushed to find anywhere with an indoor school on our side (north) - you are near me frosty89! so if thats what you would need then south would be best. North is best for peak district and countryside though! There are places around here with outdoor schools but depends how upmarket you want too!!!
 
South Derbyshire is very close to RR and has good yards. Etwall, Hilton, Repton, Findern, Ticknall sort of areas are very horsey and within 20 mins of RR, also close to Mickleover and Littleover where loads of RR people live as it is close by. RR is a massive employer in derby and quite a community so it would be worth asking colleagues when your OH starts work.
 
By the way Derby is a city, it was granted its charter for the silver jubilee, but really it is just an overgrown market town. For real city life Nottingham is less than half an hour away!

Think the landscape would be a bit of a shock for OP round our way if she's moving from Norfolk! :P
 
There is an indoor on the yard I'm moving mine to in couple of weeks once she gets back from breaking, although it's the first one I've come across in the North side (and I'm having to travel a fair way for luxury of having the facilities) There is more to choose from in the South area.

I'll return to this post and chase a few of you up when we know for sure. All a bit scary right now as haven't moved for over 15yrs. Just thought an indoor sch would be handy - we're in a rainshadow here in this part of norfolk and it really doesn't get too wet or icy. My beastie is quite well behaved as long as he has a friend and is fine with traffic and most scary stuff.
 
Well if you want an indoor Barleyfields, Hargate and Eland would be worth a look in the south. If you are looking further north, ummm, Ridgewood or Yew Tree Farm in amber valley.
 
I'm in Belper, and Yew Tree is at Hazelwood. Used to live in the south of the county nicer yards, less nice hacking..... I love the views we get hacking out, the hills are great for fitness and dry stone walls are a great field boundry!

Haha! I was told that when we moved to staffs from Peterborough 15 yrs ago, I rushed out and bought a very expensive coat that did up from my chin to the floor(I kid you not) and I've worn it maybe a dozen times as it hasn't been cold enough!? You've to many hills here for a real killer wind.:rolleyes:

Still waiting for the 6ft snowdrifts I was promised:D

We had a few of those on the lanes round our yard this year, in March/April we came home from our holidays to find the snow still stacked up against the dry stone walls! We hadn't believed it when people were saying it had been snowing! Though I found when I lived in Derby that it hardly ever snowed because it all got dumped on the hills. Even now we can have just a dusting at home (in the derwent valley) and then I drive 15 mins to the yard (in the hills overlooking the valley) and there is shedloads of snow.

Mine is currently in Marehay for breaking (nice yard, but no indoor) so once she's broken she will be moving to Selston Equestrian http://selstonequestrian.co.uk/ bit of a way to travel but worth it for the facilities :) plus they don't do DIY so it's not like I'm having to travel twice a day. I have a feeling my neighbour keeps their horses at Yew Tree.
 
Ah yes I've heard of selston, it is supposed to be very nice and they hold competitions there too. It's too far for me though!
 
Where about's are you Kat? It's a little far for me as well to be honest. But there just isn't anywhere around here like it, unless I wanted to travel to the other side of Derby.

Yeah it's a lovely yard. I think they do some shows over winter. I think they do a lot of dog agility as well.

I've told you which yard I'm at, by PM in the past ;) it hasn't got quite the facilities of your place, but it does the job.
 
Ahh I remember now Kat sorry, it was when I was looking for a yard a few weeks ago.

And as above said, Eland Lodge is very nice :) Field House in Marchington (Staffs/Derbys boarder), they have an indoor and outdoor. They do lots of shows as well.
