Further to my previous post, the vet came out today and had a look at my yearling's offside hock, which was swollen on the front inside area. She said it definitely wasn't OCD; that would usually have involved the whole joint and normally matching each side. She said it WAS a swelling on the growth plate and it was a little warm, so it could be either a kick or physitis, but it was very mild and it should be fine. I just have to restrict her turnout (she was happy with the current regime which is in at night) and not to feed her anything; also to try and keep her a bit on the poor side (although she said she wasn't fat at the moment.) Oh and to keep an eye on it. So many thanks for all the replies, I am very relieved. The vet thought she was a nice yearling.
 
What a relief!! something else you might want to do is stable bandage down over the joint to help stablise the growth plate - it really helped with my filly who had physitis. Sounds like you caught it really early. well done!
 
I forgot to ask the vet about bandaging! Thanks, will try that. How long did it take the physitis to heal on your baby and how did she turn out please? Thanks!
 
The physitis was resolved within about 3 months but she also had OCD in her stifles which wasn't so easily resolved.

Hock growth plates are one of the latest to close so you might need to periodically bandage if you see inflamation occuring... I have just bought some neoprene hock boots which I'm hoping will help with My geldings puffy hock (similar problem to your filly I think) so I'll let you know how we get on...
 
Well He's only worn his neoprene hock boots for about 6 hours today and I was amazed at the difference! his hock had reduced in size dramatically!... I can really recomend them. I got them from Equestrian Clearance and they are 'Roma' ones if you are interested...
 
I have had a look, thanks; good to know they work... I just wondered if they looked rather open at the front though, where my filly's swelling is..I have also found some WoofWear ones so will try to look at some in a local tack shop on Monday. Cheers.
