Just got back from a weeks holiday in Cornwall. We left our horse and two ponies in their paddocks with a big round bale of hay to keep them happy and our girls grandpa who lives at the end of the lane to check on them, de ice the troughs etc each day. We left last saturday and on monday morning we got the call. Our little welsh sec a has either had a very freek accident or been attacked with a violent hammer blow puncturing above his left eye down through and destroying his eyeball and on to fracture the bone of the eye socket. Thanks to our vet and help from some very good people he was attended to and in the surgery within 3 hours but my nine year old now has to collect her pony tommorow less one eye. We are carrrying out a search of the paddock tomorrow to try and find anything that could have caused this but in the mean time please challenge anyone who looks out of place around horses. £1500 vets so far.:(

thank you for your interest, we have now finished our search of the yard for other possible causes.
We are all devistated by this but have not contacted the police as we cannot prove any wrong doing.
We did find a smashed up white plastic fence stake that was extremely sharp.
A possibility I suppose but cant be sure.

Could it have been a kick?

I remember seeing a similar injury at a sales years ago. a horse reared and landed on a pony's head.

Please report this to the police and Kent Horsewatch. We had a similar nasty incident last summer, although no 'proof' was found our horse had what was very clearly a stab wound and this has been done under a well fitting bug rug!

The Police may not be able to do anything BUT they keep a record and note trends plus our lovely local team kept a close watch on our place for a few nights and still drop in for tea!

I hope that your horse is recovering well, ours did and was back in work a few months later.
