Hi,
I have a 8yr old mare who is now two weeks late coming into seson - she is normally in season every 23 days without fail.
About two months ago two colts moved into the field next to hers. They have broke through the fence twice. Although she was never in season when they did the last time she was on her way out. I am now worried that they may have got to her without us realising.
I have never breed and so don't know how to be sure. My vet has said to leave it till the end of the month and then scan her which of course we will but i just wanted to know if there was any things to look out for. Or if anyones mare has just failed to come into season.
Not only could she possibly be in foal - which alone i would probably be ok with- but she has a unbilical hernia which has been left unrepaired as it has never bothered her. I am also worried that a pregnancy could cause complication with this. Has anyone else ever come across this.
Thanks

You are a very observant owner to keep such strict eye on your Mare's seasons. My last 3 horses have been Mares, and to be honest, I never pay much attention to their seasons other then noticing they have made a mess of their nether regions. If you have a doubt about whether these colts could have covered her, you are right to get your vet to scan her, if he sees an embryo you can always ask him to pinch it out, or alternatively can't you get him to jab her, to bring her into season. I wouldn't want to have a foal unless I thought my mare was really good, and the stallion was also good, as it stands you would have to have them DNA'd to know which one was the father - and are they decent quality horses ?

My mare is good quality, although a little green we are doing well, She has good conforation and breeding her self, I had planned to have a foal from her just not yet(once she had proven herself and had the hernia repaired) and not with either of thoses colts. The one colt is of nice quality a little chessnut roan sec d but he is only 12.3 and my mare is 15.1. the other is a nice chap but not a breeder he's a 14.1 snowflake appy.
I'm only so vigilant on her seasons as she can get quite sharp when she's in it's nice to know what to expect. and she has been known to kick other mares so we seperate her when she is.
She is a nice girl other than that, but hey we can all have bad times :)

I dont have much experience to back it up - but in my opinion I would get the vet to pinch it/jab if she is due to the hernia. :)

Get her scanned NOW! If she is in foal, it is still early enough to terminate the pregnancy easily and with no harm to the mare. It just needs 1 - possibly two - shots of PG! The longer the pregnancy (if there is one) continues, the harder it is to terminate and you would not want a foal by one of these colts!
