Possible sarcoids, advice needed please

Okay some advice needed guys!

Looks like my endurance mare has sarcoids, one of which is on her elbow, another possible on on her girth

Photos have been sent to Liverpool and we are waiting for a reply/Liverpool cream.

I have no experience of sarcoids an was wondering if anyone had any advice? Am guessing that we need to hold off on the long rides now? Vet seems to think I can keep riding gently until the treatment starts.

My boy has had one large wart removed - it was cut out rather than banded because of the way it was attached. He had developed 2 others on the sheath.. We (vet & I) decided to leave them to see if they grew etc One was definately getting bigger and the flies were mithering it making it bleed. Vet came a week later-my request due to work - to take the photo's to send off to Liverpool. Since he has been one has dropped off on it's own but we are still waiting for Dr K to get back to us.
Could try a well padded girth sleeve to protect that area but I would be careful that it doesn't start to bleed and attract flies.

Thanks digger123. Normally do my longer rides in a wide girth with a sheepskin sleeve so will keep using that.
Liverpool are obviously busy, going to check with vets later this week to see if they have heard anything.

I am a sarcoid veteran as my mare has loads (stopped counting at 30). Liverpool are often busy - longest wait I have had for a response is 7 weeks!. But do make sure your Vet has got confirmation that they have the photos & details as they do, on occasion mislay them.
I'm afraid after that it's just wait & see what they say. My mare had treatment on sarcoids under trhe saddle, under the girth, in her armpit & between her back legs last October.
The ones between her back legs were like marbles under the skin - they were banded & Liverpool Cream injected. They shrivelled up & fell off in a few weeks. The other 3 had the cream applied topically. These had to have a 2nd course of treatment at the beginning of March, even though they had been much smaller to begin with, more like peas under the skin. These 3 have been much slower to heal. There was an initial swelling & they scabbed over very quickly, no raw areas but the scabs have really hung on - the first one has fallen off this week, 1 is 80% off & one is only just beginning to lift (naturally this is the one under the saddle). Based on the other scabs I reckon it will be at least October before I can start riding her again. BUT other people's scabs have fallen off & healed in a few weeks so it seems fairly random how long they take to heal. I just though I'd warn you as everything I had read on the internet led me to think I would be back riding her in about 3 months - i.e. by Christmas last year!

GULP! That sounds terrible hairycob! Do hope that your mare heals fully really soon. Fingerscrossed for you.

To be honest I am not convinced that the ones on her elbow/girth are sarcoids as the hair seems to be growing back???????
Am going to take more photos today and e-mail them to the vet and see what they think........

My mare had two massive sarcoids on her belly and one on her girth. She was treated with the Liverpool cream back in June. The vet is back out to check her progress again next week, but i don't think i'll be able to ride for at least another month or so. The treatment is quite traumatic (she needed 5 applications) . However, mine were so big and they were starting to get infected so i had no choice but to opt for the treatment. However, she's doing really well and im chuffed with how they're looking now. Its a slow process though. Good luck though

At least she doesn't seem to have been bothered at all by the treatment - just had a nice long break! But what's the betting that as soon as these are sorted one of the other sarcoids starts to play up. Ho hum.

Okay, photo from today. Am very confused as the hair seems to be growing back, so could it just be a tack rub of some sort???

Going to e-mail this to my vet tomorrow.

ummm, i'd definitely get veterinary advice as it looks to me as though it could just be a rub (fingers crossed!). If its not causing him any pain / infected, i'd be inclined to leave it as treating it can, in some circumstances just aggravate them.

Lotts_B, I spoke to my vet this morning and Liverpool do think they are sarcoids

and they are expecting the cream in the next few days. I did tell them I could see hair regrowth on part of the scabby patch but as there is still a 10p sized area left on her elbow and the same on her girth, vet still thinks they sarcoids, but possibly aggravated by tack rubbing.

Will just have to see what happens next!

OH NO! How annoying for you. If it makes you feel any better my mare has responded extremely well to the cream and her sarcoids were HUGE and often bled. I also know so many other people who have used the cream with great success. So don't worry too much

Will insurance pay or is she not covered? If not, i paid out approximately £600 to have my mare treated and im praying that she doesnt need a second treatment when the vet comes back next week (although i suspect she will!)

Hi - for what it's worth, I've had quite a bit of experience of sarcoids with several different horses. My own appaloosa mare had a nasty sarcoid (very prominent and protruding unlike the look of your horse's) at the base of her ear. It was there for over a year when she was a two-year-old. I went the homeopathic route as I'd been down the 'orthodox' route with previous cases unsuccessfully. I used a constitutional remedy at the same time as a topical cream and was told that it could take some time. Within about 2 weeks I could see that the sarcoid was being affected. After 4 months, the sarcoid sort of peeled off looking very raw and fell off. That was 6 years ago and nothing like it has returned. The homeopathic company I used (am I allowed to say?) was Crossgates Farm in Yorkshire. Hope that helps.

looks like the creditcard will have to take a major bashing

Got the farrier coming later to take her hind shoes off until the treatment finishes. Think she is quite fed up about the lack of exercise and more importantly the fact the I have stopped feeding her
