Possible ticks around my dogs ears?

So the wriggly younger one seems to have brought back 2 ticks around his ear - one in the fold of skin above his ear and one below. I can normally dispose of ticks with a paper towel and tweezer but he is having none of it and has now slunk off to bed casting filthy looks over his shoulder.

So...perserverance or vets?
 
Poor mite, they're awful! Try again but if not, off to the vets! Could you get someone else to hold him? The sooner those little buggers come off, the better.

ETA I'm sure you know this, but you can possibly leave the heads embedded in the skin, causing major infections so its always better to use specialised tick tweezers (if that's not what you're already using) :) sorry if you knew that!!
 
I locked him in the bathroom with me and 30 mins later had managed to extract 2 very fat ticks. He loved me once they were off but took a lot of coaxing to let me get them off to start with..!

I don't use the specialist tweezers as can't make them work so was told to cover the ticks with loo paper, hold them gently and twist so that all the tick comes out - I don't pull them out and he doen'st seem to have anything left (and both ticks came out with their legs waving - yeuch!)
 
I use a tick remover, its a small plastic thing that looks like the claw end of a hammer, very effective and removes all of the tick. I dont know if the pet stores in the UK sell them?
 
I will look on-line. This does seem to be a fairly regular occurence no and yes they do freak me out somewhat - ever since BIL came home after walking his dog - to find some attached to him!
 
Yes they sell them in the UK they're only about 3 pounds and you get a little one and a large one :) I know we used to sell them in the pet shop I worked in - I bought a box full and shipped them over to my auntie in Bulgaria as they are rife!
They are horrible little things - intriguing enough that I've chosen to study them for my 3rd year dissertation though! :D

We get loads of ticks round here, so in the summer my dogs are treated with Advantix, which does for fleas and ticks. It works really well at keeping the blighters off, so might be worth investigating?

FWIW, I have a special tick remover tool thingy and find it hopeless. Before I used the Advantix stuff I just used my fingernails and had a 100% full removal success rate with a good sharp tug and twist.
