Hi

Sorry if this should be in veterinary - thought more people might see it in here!

Am bit worried about Bailey - need some advice I think! Last night brought him in, he was bit subdued but is usually fairly chilled after a day of turnout. Anyway went in his stable to sort rug out etc. and noticed that behind his cheek/jaw he looked quite swollen. Prodded it and he wasn't bothered, ate his tea and tucked into net (all gone this morning).

This morning got there and the swelling has gone down but he has a bump on his cheek?! He's eaten his breakfast and tucked into his hay in the field ok & is drinking normal etc. etc. I poked it a bit and he didn't flinch although he didn't look too chuffed about me messing him about - doesn't like being messed before breakfast though so that's not a big difference!

Rang dentist this morning to see if he can come out a.s.a.p. not heard back as yet.

What do you guys think it could be? Is there anything I can do for him between now & dentist coming out? Should I have vet instead?

Sounds like grass mumps!!! - Glands coming uo from Spring grass, will try and find link to info., but nothing to worry about.

Hard to say without a picture (hint) but horses' glands (which are tucked into the curve of their jaw up towards the ear) often fill if they're out eating grass as PE says above. It is nothing to worry about.
If it is a lump along the bottom of the jaw (the flat line part facing the ground) then it can either be swelling due to bashing chin, it could be a tooth erupting (depends on his age) or it could be a dental abscess (he'd react if you pressed it for the first and third of these).

Never heard of those!!!!! The lump on his cheek is quite hard?!
He's on a bare paddock would that not have made any difference? He's never had them before?!
Thanks tho! Makes me feel bit better and the dentist might not cop for it now for not ringing me back!!!!!!!!

No, it's about central on his cheek now but was behind his cheek/jaw last night from top to bottom. Will get piccie later if it's still there - swelling has decreased since last night.
Don't think it's an abcess as I thought he'd have objected to being poked & prodded more than he did!
Thanks

My mare tends to come in looking like a hamster, then the sweeling moves across her cheeks. She is also on a bare patch, but any new grass tips seem to affect her, she is fine during the winter!!!!

Does sound quite similar actually! I've just opened a new bale of hay so had wondered if it was an allergic reaction but it's from the same guy we always use so kind of ruled that out a bit!
Does say that they are suspected allergic reaction though so the appearance would be similar.
Thanks!
