This may be long as I think it's a bit muddly. I just want to say that this is NOT a critical post about the vet, just what we should do next, we have another appointment booked for Friday.

My mum let our dog out for a wee at 1am on Saturday morning before bed and he came in limping. They went to bed and when they woke up his front left paw was very swollen and he wasn't weight bearing at all. He was also very miserable and reluctant to go for a wee or poo, and had gone off his food and was very depressed.

We took him to the vet on Saturday evening, would have been earlier but this was the only appointment available and she asked us to walk him towards her and then we took him into the treatment room.

The vet gave him a quick examination and took his temperature, which was raised, and said that he had septic arthritis in his left ankle.

She gave him a diuretic, antibiotics and some painkiller. She gave us an anti inflammatory oral suspension and antibiotic tablets to administer at home.

Sunday day when my mum got up Dog was worrying at his paw, licking it and was reluctant to let it be touched. We looked on his bed and there was what looked like a spray of blood, very pale pink, and some other little spots. It looks like something has burst. We checked between his toes and he has a small wound between his toes. On Sunday he was still limping but more able to bear weight and was more willing to go for a pootle in the garden however he is not cocking his leg (and is peeing on himself, but oh well)

Yesterday he was still worrying at his foot and we went into the pet shop to get him a toy as he's not to go out. The man in the shop said that we could use the tea tree anti-bacterial spray that we had previously bought when Dog was itchy, this has worked well in terms of getting him to leave the area alone as he is not fond of the smell.

Today he is loads better, ate two breakfasts, is acting feisty, wanting to play but still licking his foot.

What do we do until Friday and what do you think the vet's next step will be?

Soak the foot in Betadine solution three times daily,it will draw out any residue infection, try a wait and see game ,but inform the vet what you are doing. If it is`nt quite gone by next week get another appointment

JingleJools, she did say that but as I said he is 110% better but just worrying it.

He is on antibiotics anyway so we thought that we would just wait until friday and see what she says. I'll give her a ring tomorrow.
