Hi guys. I have vet coming in the day or so but would appreciate any experiences you can share.
I have a 19 year old welsh b. He was diagnosed with cushings and EMS this year. Both blood levels were 'significant' according to my vet. We have battled with laminitis even though he was on very poor grazing hence why we got him tested. He is on half a prascend and 24 metformin a day. His lami has improved although he still puts heel down first and is uncomfortable on concrete. He is turned out on poor grazing for approx 6 hours a day. I felt that if he couldn't go out with his mates he had no quality of life. He moves very strangely behind like he's wearing a nappy and swings his hindlegs out without flexing the leg much at all. When the vet checked him last year he suggested that he might have very mild wobblers. We didn't investigte at the time as he was sound and happy. A couple of time in the last 6 months I have caught him resting head against the stable wall. This was before he started on the prascend. However yesterday when I went to get him in it was as though her was tying up. He normally trots over to be first in but he was very still and moved strangely. My friend thinks I should pts. I actually called the vet to do this a 6 weeks ago and then we decided to try the metformin to try and help control the lami. I feed very carefuly (just hi fi light, lo cal balancer and fast fibre) He does have hi fibre haylage as he coughs on hay even when its soaked or steamed.
Am I being selfish keeping my boy going? I just want him to have quality of life. How do I know he has that?
