Do horses who are stabled at night need hay/dinner!? Just wondering really as it came up today at the yard - Particularly in reference to 'dieting' horses...
Thanks

horses are trickle feeders so need to eat little and often . Its not healthy to leave a horse for 12 hours without access to hay. feeds they dont *need*.

There are better ways to diet your horse other than locking him/her in a stable and starving them.

Personally I would leave them with a haynet but if they are on a diet soak the hay so most of the nutriton is gone. You can soak hay for up to 24 hours if needed.

I think that in many cases horses don't need any hard feed, but all depends on their workload, type, age, grazing quality etc etc so that needs to be worked out on a individual basis!

Absolutely
Best way would be to feed haynet at 4-5 and then put another in at 10-11 if horse is stabled at home and convenient to do so.

i remember at my old yard people used to put haynets in at 4, the horse would finish it by 6-7pm and the horses had nothing to eat for 13 hours. Really bad

All ours that are stabled at night get as much hay as they will eat, except the piggy ponies as they will just eat till they pop

They get turned out all day!
They shouldnt be left in a stable for any length of time with nothing, bad for digestive tract and can cause vices

Dieting or not they should have access to forage, good quality oat straw can be used in conjunction with hay to reduce calories!Hard feed if they overweight can be cut out,but if they are in work they may need a little chop with a vit supplement in it!

I just wondered as I soak Henry's hay (he has two slices and no hard feed) and one girl at the yard suggested i give him nothing instead to help him lose weight and i wasn't sure this was advisable so i checked on here

Glad i did now thanks!

Ask her when you see her how she would feel if she was locked in a 12x12 room for 12 -14hrs and given nothing to eat when dieting

horses losing weight is a slower process than them gaining as they need to forage for 18hrs a day for their guts to function efficiently,up the workload, reduce grazing, give hay instead and no hard feed!

You could also try a haynet with little holes, or even double-net it and see if that makes it last longer for him. I would also soak it if I were you and see how you get on.

Henry - great name

Starving horses for that long on a regular basis can cause serious problems including colic and liver problems. Trickle feeders = need trickle feeding. Dogs, cats, lions, tigers, humans = can bolt/carry away huge amounts of food = can go 12 hours or more without food. Tell your friend at the yard that she's mad.

NO if he his on a diet you can give him ab lib hay as long as it is soaked for 12hrs that will take all the goodness out of it but NO never strave you will lead your self to way more problems!

My girlie has a tea if you like which is the same amount as her Breckfast and a hayleage net about 10-12kgs over night and if shes in all day shes has about 15kgs haulage breckfast lunch and dinner.
