Possibly not the most responsible way to advertise a horse.....

OMG. Do we need to start the new slogan now, a pony is for life not just for christmas, how irresponsible can some people be, What's going to happen when some muppet buy's it for little princess and after a few weeks realises that even if it lives out it still needs feeding, grooming and looking after And I thought I had snow madness this person is just mad.

Some nice responsible people are also looking for horses this time of year, so hopefully the pony goes to a good home.

I don't think it is irresponsible since the ad is placed in H&H - if people are looking up the H&H ads they have already decided to buy anyway. It would be a bit worse if it posted on a random local non-horse related noticeboard....

I brought my daughter a pony for christmas, It was the best kept secret ever, with the help of a very dear friend. My daughter was over the moon she thought she was only getting a wheelbarrow.

We brought my sister a pony for this christmas, a 2year old Connie. Couldnt keep him secret as we got him 6weeks ago. Just got 2 wait a few years to ride him.

My cousin many moons ago was bought a pony for Xmas (i was very jealous!) he was 3 at the time & they kept him untill he popped his cloggs in his 30's. Not saying its a good idea to get a pony as a present, but sometimes its not always a bad thing :)

I brought ours in September kept her at a friends farm, while my other horses was in livery. She thought she was having one for her birthday in March so had lots of horsey things for christmas. Her face was a picture when we went up the yard and her pony was in the next stable. Best christmas ever!!

I wish we could of done that just to see her face but two days of us knowing was hard enough. We was going to start looking in spring for a youngster but he was to perfect.

TBH, I think if they're advertising in HHO, then surely people looking there are wanting a pony anyway?

Advertising like that is just canny of the sellers tbh, might persuade some people to buy their kid a pony as a present when they had been holding off - just because they have an advert like that, doesn't necessarily mean they'll sell to just anyone does it? :)

I saw one far worse a couple weeks ago. The day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday" here. It is the biggest shopping day of the year and all the retailers have a 'Black Friday" special that day.

I was on a website where the sale ad was headed "Black horse for a Black Friday bargain!!!!! This price is TODAY ONLY!" I just about died when I saw that. It went on the show the black horse and list how amazing it was and asked people to move quickly and buy today to get the deal

I am so not joking

Nothing wrong with it IMO, agree with TF it's advertised in the place you'd look if you were wanting to buy a pony, not as though it's in the pet section of the small ads in the local paper is it? We bought my daughter's pony just before Christmas (had been vaguely looking for something bigger than her loan pony since August and happened to find a suitable one), so being canny parents we told her that was her main Christmas present and to not expect much else.

Understand the sentiment behind the furore at the advert but not all Christmas ponies are chucked on the scrap heap after Christmas.
I bought my daughter a pony for Christmas. 7 years on he is still with us and will be for the rest of his life.
There are still quite a few of us who know what we are letting outselves in for. He was the beginning of a renewed passion and we now have 3. All lifers!

i too bought my daughters first pony for her christmas, kept it a secret for a week (it was november when we bought him and he was her first loan pony)
we couldnt hide our excitment and ended up writin a letter from him to her askin her to come and find him at the stables as he would like a cuddle, never cried so much in my life to see my girls face utter amazement!
there is never a 'good time' to buy a horse, this could be someones dream pony,
hope it gets a good home along with many others out there x

I would expect that anyone buying would be buying anyway and it just so happens its Xmas time so why not tie it in with that? I don't really see an issue. I got my first pony for my birthday - but then I had bitched about wanting one for several years beforehand... I still have them now (almost 20 years later).

I kind of see why folk are getting upset at it being advertised as an ideal xmas present - but, it's in H&H not the Gumtree or adtrader so more specific for equine buyers. It's 12hh so a first pony, how many of us at the age we got a 12hh pony really 'tried' before we bought? At that size and age of a small rider if you can see the pony round kids and being handled and ridden then I think that's what most of us go on. At the end of it all if the seller is irresponsible she'll sell to anyone, if not she'll be honest and sell to folk who look like they know what they are about or in a place to have decent help and backup in place. I've decorated 3 ponies that 'santa' brought and all have gone to great homes and been in them for long term if not life.

I also agree with others who say that as it is advertised on H&H, hopefully responsible people who are already looking for a pony will see it, at least it's not advertised in the local shop (well I guess it could be!). I would have loved a pony for Christmas and I see no problem with it so long as the parents are responsible and knowledgeable.

My problem with it is it says ideal Christmas present, but very little info about the horse....If I was buying a pony for my child I would want to see more info about what it is like ridden-wise, and that it is safe for a child....but all I see is that it is a 5 year old, broken, in and outdoor? Although I guess that's what phoning is for :)
