I have a pony who keeps itching his hind quarters and bottom, his bottom hole looks a bit "puffy" but I've not seen any worms or substance on the outside. I've been cleaning it and putting aloe vera gel on to ease, which has helped a bit but not entirely.

Now suspecting it might be pinworm, and reading up on it seems to be either Panacur Guard 5 day wormer or Strongoid P, not sure if this is single or double dose I need to give?

And do I need to worm 10 days later, 3 weeks later, or what with the same wormer - even is symptoms go away? Or only if symptoms still there?

Previously he's been wormed on either Equest or Pramox, which I thought killed everything, so was shocked to read up and find out it doesn't help the pinworm.(last routine wormer was Pramox on 11/8/14 and was planning Equest at the end of November, maybe not now?)

Advice please from your experiences and what doses/regularity I dose at?

Either panacur 5 day or strongid P (I use at double dose) would be sufficient. In theory equest/pramox should kill pinworms but because the modern wormers are absorbed too early in the gut, it doesn't reach the pinworms.

Have you noticed any orange/yellow coloured stuff around his anus at all? If you don't notice them hanging out to lay their eggs, then you should still be able to see what they leave behind, as it were.

You will need to clean/disinfect everything he scratches on too - electric fence the field, powerwash the stable. Wash his anus area, and back legs daily with something like dilute hibiscrub. Some people use Vaseline or neem oil around the anus after washing to help prevent the eggs sticking.

Personally I would worm a month later with whichever product you haven't used.

I completely feel your pain - have been battling this for 10 months now, hopefully by the time I get to the 12 month mark we will be pinworm free!

ETA - contact westgate, they have a pinworm info sheet they send out, and also you can send a pinworm test in to them (very scientific method of sellotape around the anus to collect possible eggs)

Am sure your vet would also have a look at a sample for you if you sent them the sellotape, it is only a look down the microscope.

I'd err on double dose strongid in the first instance.
