I rode my little Jolene for the first time today - on a group hack - 6 of us - and she was the youngest. She's 3 - and has been under saddle for about 4 weeks!!

This is Jolene during early schooling! (last week!)

It was my first time on her (I let my rider do the difficult stuff these days :D) and she was absolutely amazing!

We hacked two miles on the road and did our new grass bridlepath which is fantastic - a wide grass track around a HUGE arable field and then back along our 'quiet' road. Except it wasn't quiet today! We met a convoy from the local shoot, numerous lorries, cars, an oil tanker - and then - the final test!! We came around a blind corner - thankfully walking - to have a LARGE tractor with LARGE empty bale trailer heading at us at speed! Driver burnt rubber standing on his brakes (stupid a*se was a contractor's driver - the locals have more sense!) Jolene stopped VERY briefly, gave tractor a look of disdain, and stalked past it!

She kept up with Sky all the way (and he has a VERY big stride) - and the other 4 had to trot regularly to catch up with us in walk! And she did NOTHING wrong at all - just a tiny skip with her back feet when she stood on a road drain grill!

She will be for sale, sadly - but hopefully no-one will come NEAR her because of her colour and I'll have a great excuse to keep her! :D

She HAS to be one of the most PERFECT 3 year olds I've ever ridden - forward, willing, easy to slow down and stop (just think it and she does it!) It makes all the trials and tribulations of breeding SO worthwhile!

For those who like breeding details: she's by my RID stallion out of an unpapered, unsound (through injury) cob x mare (the sort people are criticised for breeding from!)

What a lovely horse and congratulations for getting on and riding her!! She must be very brave going past a big tractor WITH a big trailer too!! It's surprising how brave some youngsters are! The first time my youngster was taken out on the roads (2 1/2 years old) he had a bus literally up his bottom and didn't bat an eyelid! Of course I gave the bus driver a very big telling off to say the least and he stopped and waited for me to then be out of sight before carrying on. Shame for you to be selling her, she looks like she will turn into something very special when she gets a bit older.

Alex.

None of mine mind tractors - they're fed from a compact tractor in the field. And a BIG tractor means more food! :D

That's the chief drawback of breeding! :( Fortunately I've been able to sell my youngsters privately to NICE people who keep in touch and let me know how they're doing. And I think this one will be special. Her older sister (aged 4) is showing a HELL of a jump - and is making her new owner very happy.
