We are thinking of putting in some post and rail fencing at our field, and were wondering how many rails of fencing to use.

So, all of you who have post and rail - please count your rails for me!!

I have two in some areas and three in others, but I reckon a smalley could get out if it really wanted to in the two rail area. Now I have a smalley companion, and the nice neighbouring people who used to have a hedge alongside that bit, went and ripped most of it out, I shall be on the lookout.

Alwys have three rails and also put equi fencing on it as this prevents the horses kicking through the fencing and if they do and break a rail it keeps the broken rail immobilized. Make sure that the rails are heavy duty ones and not thin. Also concrete in every third post.

bear in mind that your horses will very probably chew it, so you'll have to electric-tape above every rail...

i used to have to electric-tape down the uprights as well, as mine chewed those too.
needless to say, i don't have p&r any more.

We don't electirc fence anything but we have no chewers/cribbers.
We have post and rail with 4 rails, and that's approx 1.40 high. If I was doing anything I thought they woudl jump out (as our sandschool and fields have the same fencing) I would put another rail approx 20cm above that. Ours looks smart and is lasting well.
