Hi all,

I will soon be getting some quotes for post and rail fencing.
I have 3.5 acres I need to be fenced and think I have decided on post and rail. The field has hedges on two sides and a HUGE ditch the other two sides. I am going to fence it as well so it is super safe and looks smart.

Does anyone know how much to expect to pay per acre for post and rail and anything to check for or ask when I am getting the quotes?

Or does anyone know someone reliable in the South Norfolk area?

Thanks in advance?

not sure how much you'd pay a contractor but wood fencing is pretty expensive these days. I reckon for materials alone you'd be looking at £12/m. I opted for sheep netting with a rail over as it was so pricey!

We charge £5.50 a metre to erect P & R, £100 to hang a gate, all plus vat. Materials would be on top of that so if you are registered for vat it might be better if you paid the supplier direct and the contractors separately although if they source materials, that's where their tiny bit of profit comes in!
If the land adjoins the house, it is far smarter to have four rails but three rails should be your minimum; far more stable and safer than just two and smarter, well worth the extra cost IMO (not just as a money grabbing exercise either!)
You really need to get some people out to give you quotes as it's no use just telling them you need 1000 metres, they will need to see the land and if there are anything that could make life difficult (tree roots, sandstone, concrete, water courses, you name it, there's usually something; also ask them if there are any examples of their fencing in the area that you could have a look at to see the quality of both the materials used and the workmanship. Alternatively, ask at your local timber yard for names they recommend for equestrian fencing or your local farmers, they should be able to help you; I'd be very wary of using someone who mainly does domestic work, they would have little or no idea about horse safety.

My house looks out over the land, it is basically our view so we want it to look super smart. I have been quoted about 3k per acre as a rough estimate and would deff want 3 rails if not 4.

As our horses have a tendancy to scratch their bottoms on anything they can we went for round wooden uprights and green electric tape, with tensioners so it's always taut and looks smart.

Also, drove past a field this morning with two horses absentmindedly chewing the top rail of some post and rail, looking harder every single rail was chewed!

P & R is always the most attractive though!

YO got all of hers at auction which meant it was loads cheaper. I love post and rail - it looks ace

I have had miles of Post and Rail done and mine is half rounds and post and 2 - with a high tension wire on top - I pay £4.70 a metre. My gates come in about £85 including gates and posts. I find it is as cheap for me to get the gates as it is the contractor so I go and get those and choose the type I want. If I want 3 rails then I pay 5.20 a metre.

I always have the high tension wire as it stops horses chewing the rails.

Although the wood is treated I always retreat all the wood before it is erected. I also concrete in every third post. I also put equi-fencing on it which is a tight sheep fencing which means that if the rails break it keeps everything together. Also stops the horses kicking through the fence line. Use heavy duty rails not the thin ones.
