Our one year old whippet was castrated last Thursday. The vet said to limit him to on-lead only walks for ten days, however he's going absolutely stir crazy and it's very clear that on-lead pootles are not enough, he just wants to run.

He's got plenty of toys, including boredom breaker type ones that he's getting food in and I've even let him have a couple of bounces round the garden but he's just so fed up. So far today he's spent most of his time staring wistfully out of the patio doors whining :(

The wound is looking brilliant, you can barely see it now. Would it be a really stupid idea to take him out and let him have a bit of a blast round? I'm thinking only a relatively short walk but enough for him to at least stretch his legs.

I'm not sure I can cope until Monday with him being whingey :o

I sympathise, I had exactly the same with Diesel and he is a big Dobe, I just took the time to do lots of training and ticking the days off the calender:eek::D I also had to separate him from his sister because he just wanted to play in the house with her and if I went out I had to make sure he was in a room on his own.

On lead, maybe a longer than usual lead to give him the illusion of a bit of freedom?

Bear was cut last week and gets sutures out on Friday, it is killing me, mostly because he needs his helmet on or will chew!

I've had cuddles and played quietly with him, like exchanging toys, kongs, but have been very strict and moved the crate round so he's at least in the same room. It has been very hard work with his brother (who is also very lively and big dog) but you have to be strict, I think, to ensure the best healing for the wound. I certainly woldn't let him have a 'blast around'. It's just not worth it. Patience, it's only another couple of days!

I don't keep mine on the lead:eek: maybe a day or 2 and thats it, off and away:p even the rescues, where they run around (huge cobbled yard) they are literally off and running the day after.

The illusion of freedom won't cut it unfortunately, he's just absolutely desperate to run. He's even got to go out to the toilet on lead at the moment because he keeps trying to escape over the fence from the toilet area into the rest of the garden :o

It was so much easier when our bitch was spayed, she didn't feel like doing anything for a week or so after being spayed. The whippet was ever so slightly sore the day after and since then has been convinced there's absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be behaving as normal

I suppose I should just be thankful he's not been remotely interested in the wound so hasn't needed a lamp shade on, he'd have been lethal

Must be the season for the snip!! Harley was done Monday last week!

He wasnt himslef onthe Tuesday, but Wednesday was totally fine. Weve been taking him for quite long lead walks and it seems to be making him content enough. He had his vet check on Monday (dissolvable stitches, so nothing needed doing) and he was really please and said he could go off lead now. On the documentation they sent home it said 2 weeks. We are keeping on lead for a bit longer because 1 he does seem ok with it and 2 the reason he had the snip was that he bogged off after what we expect was a bitches scent, so the longer we leave it the more his hormones will decrease.

Personally, I would confine off lead entertainment to your back garden for the time being. A ruddy great bone should keep him occupied in your garden.
