My horse was castrated on Tuesday (14th), he had to have a GA as he had one testicle retained, however he came through it all fine and came home on the 15th, he had to stay in for 2 days with a 20min in hand walk each day and if no discharge could go out in a very small paddock for 3 days before returning to normal routine.

We decided that as there was a bit of dripping and we haven't got a suitable small paddock and he would probably go crazy and injure himself we have kept him on box rest for the full 5 days with a 20min walk in hand each day. After his walk (and including today) he has some watery liquid dripping from the cut, not much and it stops fairly quickly, it is not swollen at all and looks fine. I am not sure if I should turn him out tommorrow or wait until there is no discharge? I dont want him to go mad and open it up in the field tommorrow and end up with more box rest.

I will ring the vets but they dont open until after I leave for work which means he can either go out tommorrow morning early or have another day of box rest, any ideas anybody?

I'm surprised you were told to keep him in, as exercise is the best thing for a horse post castration. This is probably why there is still discharge.

I would get him out ASAP, and if you're really worried about him doing any damage to himself (unlikely) give him a shot of sedalin an hour before.

Yes I was suprised too, another colt I had cut was out straight away and turn out as much as possible, I think it may have been as they had to go in to his inaugal (spelling?) canal to get one of his testicles as only one had dropped.

the discharge is due to the horse not moving enough - would be increasing his in hand walking if you don't have a small paddock to turn him into but i wouldn't be throwing him out in a big field to hoon around in. hope this helps

Give him a mild sedative and turn out. this will prevent him going mental but he needs to move.
My sister's colt went straight from school where he was castrated to the field.

Thank you for the advice everybody, I decided to turn out but on his own as he is less likely to go charging around with the others (they all wind each other up), he ran around and leapt about a bit but not too much and seems fine, I will leave him going out on his own for this week and put him back with the others perhaps next week. There is no swelling and discharge has stopped so all looking good :-)
