So, I was changing my silk to my santa hat for tomorrow. Had checked front of hat post fall as I landed on my forehead and thought it would probably be ok albeit scratched by the sand (as was my phone screen protector in my bra, somehow. . . )

yet somehow I've managed to put a small, perfectly round hole in the back of it.

Erm, the hat took the impact with your head in it, it needed replacing even if there was no visible damage. No matter putting a Santa hat on it, it needs consigning to the bin!

I know it's hard, I once fell off twice in 2 weeks, and the hat I started with was quite new already! It was 3 new hats within 6 months!!!

Eep. After a fall as bad as yours, I wouldn't have considered reusing the hat! Thank goodness that you were wearing a decent hat. What make/model is it?

Is that also an inward deformation on the front rim, about 5cm to the left (as if you were wearing it) from the logo, and diagonally opposite the hole on the back?

Would be fascinating to see it dissected. Do the hat manufacturers take squished hats back to examine them, to help their product development?

How long is it since you took off the silk? I'm betting that the round hole is unrelated and has been there some time, the product of some unnoticed knock on a small object or a sharp corner.

As for the rim looking deformed, I wouldn't worry. I have the same hat; there is a plastic band that slips over the edge of the shell, and it often moved a little bit of even comes off completely for a few of centimetres.

But looking at the second picture, of the rear of the hat, there are what look like three rivets securing the inner pieces (cradle? don't know the correct term) to the shell. The hole looks like it's sat the right distance to have been a fourth rivet. That's serious.

New hat time!

Is the round hole not where one of the studs or whatever they are have fallen off?
As annoying as it is I’d also be replacing!

x posted. Rivet is a better word!

There wasn't any question, having looked at it properly whether I should replace it, though I also feel less silly for going to A+E and actually being remarkably ok. :) Especially as this is my 'doing more dangerous stuff hat'. Going to see if they local have them this morning, shame it is just after olympia!

Not since the summer when I last went on the back of the carriage for Rara because it's a pita to get the mesh cover it came with back on but I've never fallen off in it before/it's not been dropped.

The front I did question think is the angle of the photo/the padding band as that's unglued to have custom padding in so doesn't fit so neatly/the fact that it isn't straight in front as a hat anyway

Not a rivet, that was my first thought too!

Looks like someone’s shot you ?

I am dreadful for not replacing my hat. I had quite a bad fall in the spring and hit my head both on the horse and the ground, of which I’m still having visual disturbances, and although I remember thinking I ought to replace my hat, I didn’t. It really did just slip my mind and before you know it, months have passed. Not good. I was wearing that hat again when I broke my ankle, but fortunately my head didn’t impact the floor at all.
Anyway, my mum has said she will buy me a new one before I start riding again. She was quite horrified to find I’d not replaced it after that fall, understandably. I almost wish they’d invent a hat with a small panel on it that changed colour if it had a knock strong enough that meant the internal structure may well be compromised.
I know the reality is that you should replace it every time, but I think an external visual would be helpful because I imagine a lot of people are like me and take a chance that maybe they shouldn’t.

The reason I ended up with the CO proII was because they changed the HS1s! the new proII just sits too high.

Local's best option (and they do have quite a lot) was a 58 champion then we pad it with a gap at the front. . but Im not totally convinced when I've always been a 56/57.

Been to try new version of my hat,
of course it doesn't fit now ??

I trust they were trying like for like re oval for oval fit, not oval to round? (or round to oval). I’ve found a lot of retailers aren’t actually aware of the two different CO shapes available ?

Yup round for round - tho I think my head is oval and shape of cycle helmet (remember that saga of buying 9 ...) is def oval. Historically issues with front pressure.
old HS1 fitted quite well but the new (like 6 years ago) version fits lower and that made me sort of between sizes, 56 didn't go on anymore.

CO themselves fitted current pro II as a 57 round and padded the back - but it did get loose on the sides and I added more padding to everywhere but the front myself (making it a bit like the 4 star which didn't fit when I tried it)
Tried 57 round and oval on today but neither are right.

There's more shop options near mums so I suspect a post christmas trip might be in order, though there was me + 3 others comparing today ?

Have a new CO MS1 (a mips one, interesting that no one really pushing the mips versions I had to ask about them) in a 56 (historically my size more than a 57)
I tried a LOT on, this one just felt right, others technically 'correct' but just didn't give the same feel. Everyone agreed new proII no good and tbf I think my old one was prob a bit borderline though it obv did the job.
this is a version release that includes some influencers name on the back of the silk that I've never heard of ?, and gives me a fancy rose gold badge on the front which made it a bit more£ but it was there, I'd had it on my head so I took it home ?

Neck still been remarkably ok.

I got that for Christmas too. Anyone want the hat bag and dull grey cover that came with it?

I was a size 56 until my late 30s. It appears my head got fat at that point and I'm now firmly in the 58 camp.
