When a horse dies suddenly or for an unknown reason then often their is a post mortem done, right? Well out of itrest do you have to pay for this, or do the vets want to do it for research?

I don`t know about horses (have never needed to have a PM done), but i used to work at a theme park and when one of the Fallow Deer died suddenly we sent it to the SAC at Auchincruive and we were never charged.

from what i know a friend had one done the insurance paid, but i would be fairly sure someone will have to pay

Im afraid that its "Money Up Front", unless its something that interests the vet soooo much that he brings his sarnies and thermos flask with him

. Mairi.

it eould be payable by yourself which is a bit mean when some insurance companies insist on a PM before they pay out for sudden death related claims.

My cobbie was PTS recently. Her illness was quite sudden and quite out of the blue and while the vets were pretty sure what it was they couldn't be certain. They asked if a I wanted a post mortem done to determine the cause so I said no but they were welcome to do one for themselves if it would be helpful for or of interest to them which they did. So I got to find out the cause of death but didn't have to pay. It was equine lymphosarcoma btw and she was just 13yrs old..

My horse dropped dead suddenly with a 3 week old foal at foot. Insurance wouldn't pay out unless they knew the cause of death was not "deliberate". But we were quoted £800 for the PM - more than she was insured for. I was quite upset by it all, and I'm still coming to terms with the fact I'll never know what happened to her.

When a friends horse died of (it was belived) complications from worming and bute use at the same time - the worming company paid for the post mortem.

Other than that - I don't know....

Another good reason to support the Hunt Kennels.
Sadly had a mare die suddenly years ago.
Talked to the kennelman and understanding the years he has been looking at horses inners ... Paid him £100 to have a go.
Vet then agreed to pop to the kennels for the cost of a callout to discuss with the kennelman as to what he had found .... 2 heads together proved worthwhile ....and worth every penny for piece of mind.
