A very thought provoking piece, its a terrible thing that dogs have to be used in this way, I can understand the need for sniffer dogs but not the rest.

It's a pity they are such commodities that they cannot be retired.....dunno if I could place my full trust in an animal that has been 'broken' then patched up (patched over?) and put back on the field..tough one

They are retiring roughly half of them. I'm assuming that the other half are not "as broken" ?

Cesar Milan worked with one such Lab, poor dog was frightened by his own shadow.
Milan did get it a lot more secure but it took a long time and even then the dog was not completely right.
