I know there have been quite a lot of posts along similar line but would be interested to know what people feed their horses who are doing light work and need to keep weight (though post gastrogard weight really good). Horse is out more or less full time other than when I cruelly drag him in to do some work or to have a sleep.

I get very confused (am a simple being) about starch, grain etc. Horse is currently not keen on alfalfa (apologies spelling has gone out the window).

Brand names and types of feed would be appreciated!

I have mine on Solution Mash, alfalfa cubes and Sumo Original. She also gets Forage n Fiber but its more of a token feed than anything else so she has something on her plate when the other horses are eating.

She is in medium work but does have a hardtime keeping weight, so I need to make sure she has a very calorie dense feed without the starch and sugar competition mixes have.

Its been really hard to find something that works for her and I tried pretty much everything so if you need any help, PM me :)

Really I think keep it basic. Ive done so much reading and searching and question asking on the very same subject!
My horse was also not really keen on Alfalfa- I kept trying too feed him Dengie Healthy tummy but in truth it probably did him no favours as he left so much!
I have been feeding Dodson and Horrell high fibre nuts and speedibeet- which is another good source of fibre. Then I also add (I did cut it out for a time but horse got a bit over zealous eating!) Dengie Hifi, although this does have a very light coating of molasses which I wasn't pleased at. A chaff completely molasses free would be ideal if you can find one.
As much hay as possible- not haylage.
I also add Protexin gut balancer as its a recommended and cheap pre and pro biotic and Aloe vera juice.
Corn oil is also said too be very beneficial (has too be corn not veg or sunflower)
Im no expert but like I say have researched as much as I can so am still trying to get it all perfectly correct!

Mine doesn't really like alfalfa & too much sends him nuts! I've used top spec conditioning cubes, dried grass, grass pellets, speedibeet, spillers conditioning chaff, solution mash, releve. Mines a poor doer fussy TB,doesn't need feed for energy(has plenty of that) I've also used the top spec conditioning flakes which are oats I think, with no issues. Horse eats what I want in winter when in overnight but once out 24 /7 I have to put small amounts of coarse mix in to tempt him to eat,at the mo he's having pasture mix, equilibra 500 balancer & finishing top spec flakes up from winter. I'm sneaking some releve in,in the hope I can replace the pasture mix with that. I've also used some spillers cereal free cubes as well-think they were the slow release ones. It's difficult when everything & everyone suggests alfalfa for ulcers & you've got one that can't have it,I tried the Alfa & hi if molasses free stuff but he wouldn't even try them!

we have our tb on top spec cool condition cubes, cool balancer and top chop. totally different wee horse and his condition is great!

I thought it was important to feed horses a low or non cereal diet and isn't conditioning cubes cereal based? I'm only asking as I am wondering the same question as the OP and generally curious :) so confusing to know what to feed them.

Thanks for replies so far. All further input gratefully received. Am hoping he may decide alfalfa is okay again at some point.

top Spec cool condition cubes don't contain any cereal whereas my feed merchants own make is full of the stuff! I also asked about the super conditioning flakes and they said that you shouldnt feed them.

Some conditioning cubes such as top spec are cereal free. Forgot to say I've also used equijewell & omega rice to put weight on him & currently has linseed(was off that but now decided he can eat some in his feed!) Have got some soya to try but everytime I add a bit he won't eat so may give up on that until nxt winter!

Try D&H ERS pellets or Saracen Re-leve - mine is on the Saracen. Oil based foods are excellent for ulcer horses - I feed micronised linseed for condition. The only chaff type thing mine reliably eats is Winergy, he gets the growth as that's the highest calorie one of the ones that are low starch. Mine is very fussy but I can hide supplements in this.

Show Improver pencils by Saracen contain EquiJewel and are low starch and high in fibre. Worked well with ex racer who was fussy with feed..

Completely agree with this comment. My ex racer was originally on TopSpec and then I changed to a feed merchants own brand and this brought gastric and hindgut ulcers back, he's now back on TopSpec and is a completely different chilled out horse.

Soaked grass nuts, plain unmollassed chop, micronised linseed, balancer, salt and high fibre nuts. He also gets Halleys Alfa blox alongside adlib hay to munch on.
