CM had a nasty virus last winter and had ventipulmin and antibiotics as she got a lung infection. She has had a bout of breathing problems this summer which was fixed with more ventipulmin. I was looking at her just now and thinking that she was breathing a bit heavily for her normal self at rest. OK - I could have missed her galloping about before I was there, but she wasn't sweaty. I'm going to talk to the Vet tomorrow if I decide that her breathing isn't right, she wont be left if I'm not happy with her.

I was wondering if the virus could have left her with lung damage? Is she now prone to breathing problems?

It can certainly make them more sensitive to dust, pollen or further infections, one of mine is very sensitive to any dust now and is best kept out with haylage rather than hay, your mare may need a further course of ventipulmin to clear her airways before it becomes a real issue.

Thank you , I did wonder if she had been sensitized.

If I'm not happy I will talk to the vet as I wont risk a problem developing. I'm just not sure if there's a problem or I'm being paranoid. I've still got lots of grass, so they are just out in the field at the mo (so no dust).

Sorry to hear this and quite upsetting seeing them struggling to breathe. There was a posting on the 'feeding' section and 2 months ago and 2 horses had amazing results with the Pulmon ez where ventipulmon didn't help. Try and check it out. Hope he gets better real soon.

Unfortunately respiratory infections even if treated immediately can and do cause long term damage and /rao
So I would treat as of it was all the time

Not applicable in your case but it's the reason I get frustrated when some mess about with coughing horses.

I hope in your horses case it's just a temporary thing
