Its a real pickle and a difficult one to solve to please everyone
In our village we have a lovely post lady, who works part time. She spends time chatting to people (sometimes the only contact the elderly get) and is often late back finishing post 2pm, so later than she is paid for.
However the full time bods, who are paid double, often finish their shifts and get back before her.
Now she has angina and cannot go quite so fast, some of the blokes are fit young men and obviously go faster. She is providing a public service (kind of), so how do you recognise this?
So do you pay per hour and discourage fast delivery and efficiency, or do you continue in current system?
The work isn't that well paid, but the current system means that many can hold down a second job.
That said they are probably going to have to let the pensions thing go, as defined benefit pensions are a dying breed and really hurt companies.
And to the poster who said about dogs - our postie carries tesco gravy bones, so we often have to extract the terriers from her van and all dogs love her!!
