Wandering if anyone can shed some light .....

Friend has a lovely 1 year old neapolitan mastiff called Pluto , hes been having Seizures since friday , Hes spent all day at the vets yesterday and is coming home this evening , Hes been put on medication to help with the seizures .

My friend is at her wits end and is so upset .

Can anyone shed any light on this situation ?
Anyone have experience with this sort of thing ?

I should say that she is planning to have an mri scan done , but wants to know what the outcome will be for poor pluto .

Any info at all would be great . I suppose she just wants reassurance ??

Nothing to help really, except to say that I think that Neopolitan Mastiffs are such lovely dogs. I hope everything is sorted and the poor dog gets better.

I'm the opposite of SF, I can't bear Neopolitan Mastiffs, I think they are horrific looking dogs and every one I have met (only about 10) have all been nasty animals. Anyhow that is neither here nor there except I wouldn't want to be the owner when one of those monsters has a bad seizure.

I knew a Labrador who used to have seizures. The owners had him on medication and it was actually rather successful. They were not the most diligent of owners though and sometimes used to forget to give him his medication, which of course would result in a seizure. When they did remember, he was absolutely fine. He died a little younger than Labs, but not much, he was 11 years old, so did manage to a decent age.

Good luck to your friend.

I can't answer that question about the liver damage as I don't know what medication they are prescribing. To be honest though, it sounds like a Catch22 situation - damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.

Yes the ones I've met have been exceptionally territorial, are incredibly possessive (not in a healthy way) of one particular person and just very nasty undertones to them. Even though I do have a couple of primitive breed dogs, mine are passive livestock dogs so don't tend to bother people too much; they just munch up any animal predator. Neapolitans are not something I would ever consider due to their highly aggressive nature within a, still, primitive dog mind.

Your friends vet will ask them to monitor the fits, and if there is a pattern, they will prescribe drugs, as Tia suggests drugs for epilepsy can be successful in management.

All the ones I have come across have believe it or not suffered from epilepsy, we have had a few in for rehoming, all took fits

, my mams friend has them, 3 in total, all took fits

They are alike shar-pei's to me, a health hazard on legs, they are so badly bred, they cost a fortune to insure, they have so many problems.

Well at the minute , I dont think the vets are saying much, I really dont know the full story, but G (lets call friend G) has said that she wants an mri done to see what exactly is going on . Only problem is the mri scan is only done once a month here in n.ireland and thats even depending on if there is enough clients .

Will get more of the story tomorrow when Im talking to G .

Thanks Folk x

If it is epilepsy then I can say that my lab started having fits when she got to about 8yrs old for know reason whatsoever, it just seemed to start. She is now on medication and in the first year she had 3 fits then 1 fit the year after and now hasn't had any since and she is now 14.
If it is this, please remember they are more horrible for us to see than they actually are for the dog.

Hope everything turns out ok. x

My St Bernard, who sadly passed on 6 weeks ago, had what we thought were seizures but it turned out they were related to heart failure rather than epilepsy but they looked uncannily like epilepsy. Suddenly the heart would miss a beat or not pump powerfully enough and the oxygen would be cut off to his brain.
He would suddenly just collapse, legs and head all over the place usualy seizure type thing. I agree that it is a lot worse for us than them, we would all be in tears trying to hold his head, soothe him etc and then he would come out of it and look quite worried for us!!!!

hi , i can honestly say i understand your friends situation.
my dog had his first fit at the age of 3 years we had loads of tests checked for thyroid probs but he has epilepsy. he is on epiphen and it does help control the fits. i can understand your friends concern about the drug but i took the decision at his young age quality of life was more important.my parents had a dog with epilepsy and he was on drugs from 6months old and was 12 years old when he died,no probs with his liver. today my boy has had two fits so he is off to the vets again. best wishes to your friend and her dog.

Colleen - just another thought for your pal, tell her to be careful, when my friend's dog had his first fit she was mucking around with him and he was being a bit mouthy - he clamped down on her hand when the fit started and she couldn't get him off, it was a bit of a mess by the time it was over.

Just something to think about with such a large dog.

Horrible situation!

Thanks folks , Havent heard much from her today, She just rang me briefly asking if I could sort her horses out .

I would say she has her hands full with him .

C ... Yeah I think she is aware of that ... well Im pretty sure she is, poor bugger isnt himself from what she was telling me

Hey Col, if she or you ever wants to speak to my friend with the epileptic dog, PM me.

My two are grand, Boydog's training is really coming on, so happy with him, after several months of really hard work. Still has allergies coming out his ears (he had another lovely bath today in which I got more water on me than he did) but he is in really good form, tail never stops wagging.

Bella is just a wee madam as usual!

Poor Pluto, no experience of it but thought it worth a mention that if you have a dog fitting and another dog is close, they may attack the fitting dog (when normally they live happily together).

Just a wee update , He has been abit more himself today, The medication seems to be working that bit better, G has organised an MRI scan for the 18th of march which is still abit away, Shes been ringing dublin veterinary college to see if she can get a quicker appointment and they are to ring back , So fingers crossed .

Thanks for that rebel, he is seperate from the rest of the dogs anyways
