What would be a maintenance dose of Bute for a 17HH medium weight arthritic horse ? People at yard are saying only one sachet per day or every other day, but I am sure that for a horse this size it could be more ?

2 a day coz one sachet covers body weight of 450kg so your friends body weight will be more than that!

As 'bute is a POM (Prescription only medicine) your friend must have obtained it from a vet so could ask his/her advice regarding dosage.

s he was told 4 sachets a day for a week which seems excessive, and then when necessary ! Which is a bit of a loose prescription. I use 1 a day for my 16HH .

Four sachets a day for a 17hh horse doesn't seem excessive to me.
Besides, many vets do a 'loading dose' which involves giving them a lot at the beginning til it is in their system and working, then reducing to a lower, maintenance level dose.
I'd probably do 2 sachets morning and night for a week, then do 1 sachet morning and night - keep reducing til you are at the minimum dose that controls the arthritis sypmtoms.
But do check with the vet to make sure that's what s/he intended.
