It has been brought to our attention that many of the threads on this topic contain defamatory comments and personal attacks on various individuals involved. While we accept that this is a contentious issue that people feel passionate about, this does not excuse people from failing to comply with the forum terms and conditions. It doesn't happen very often but we have got reports coming in for the main website from the Hickstead Derby meeting so I will be online from time to time over the weekend.

You have missed loads.
Sure someone else can fill in the details, but she continued to ride her lame horse to finnish XC and horse was later PTS.

do you have more of the ride? This misconstrues it a bit in that it wasn't a sudden stumble and injury. The horse was clearly lame for a few fences before. And she was taking the crop to him to push him on.
 
Having followed the debate, this is the first time I've seen it.
I thought I was going to throw up.
You should put this on a new post for all those who haven't seen it, and you're right, it does need to be seen...
 
MurphysMinder - Ive just checked that link and its working fine for me....? Nobody would have removed it as its actually the NBC Sports page (ie. the ones who filmed it all originally) - you pay and you get to watch all of Kentucky (dressage, SJ and the XC).

Gonetofrance - Yeah, but that tinypic link is just the bit of where the horse goes lame. I meant she can see the ENTIRE of AT's round on the NBC Sports link.
 
I haven't seen that before...that poor horse...as she was approaching the final fence after the poor thing had hobbled along I almost had my eyes shut...poor horse/
 
having not seen the video prior to today, i was on her side - i thought it highly possible that she didnt realise he was lame, not just flagging, and her comments seemed so contrite. But having just now seen the clip, i can't understand how the hell she could have found it in her to keep egging him on...poor horse reminded me of barbaro, he was that lame. Gives the sport a bad name.
 
First time i've seen the vid as well, as an inexperienced owner I always worry that I might not realise my horse is lame, but even I would have spotted that one. The poor horse, how it jumped the last fence and stayed upright on landing I've no idea?
 
I think that is it sad that everyone is being so negative about Amy Tyron. At this level the riders genuinely love all of their top horses. The video isnt very nice to watch I do agree......answer to that is don't watch it! If you imagine the adrenalin that is going through her blood at the time of this you wouldnt think straight. It is really easy to judge and make comment but we will never truly understand what went throught her mind at the time the horse went lame, I doubt she can really remember! I rode a horse XC once and he screwed over the second from last fence, he jumped the last just felt tired. When I pulled him up he felt as though he was tyin up so I jumped off and got assistance. Within 5 mins he was dead........he had suffered a heart attack! I blamed myself for that, and I image Amy Tryron is very cut about this. It's a tragic loss, and I am sure that if Amy Tyron could turn back the clock she would of pulled up. But would the horse of still had a chance?! We will never know!

LOL! And your proof of that is?? I think it's terribly naive to assume that every pro rider, due to the level they compete at, loves their horses...

Gosh that is very naive. Some top riders couldn't give 2 figs about their horses, so long as they are money making machines.
 
Whether the horse would have survived is irrelevant; the fact is that a rider appeared to put her own desire for success above the welfare of an animal. Not much 'love' in her actions there! If she was unable to tell that the horse was lame she has no right to be riding one in the first place. Is this defamatory? It is certainly how it appeared to me from the video, although maybe I didn't watch the events through the same filter as the FEI. As for your own esperience - you were very lucky the horse didn't collapse and die while you were riding; heart attacks can be pretty instantaneous. The difference is you felt your horse flag, which is a lot different from going lame.
 
im sorry but anyone would be able to have felt something was not right with the horse... shame on her for making the horse carrying on..

So you are telling me the top riders dont care about their horses?! Do you know what, neither of us know. But I would like to think they have a very strong bond riding them six days a week, producing them up through the levels, then riding them round these big courses? Making sure they are 100% before they run them. They are so precious about them.

I also believe that video clip makes it look like along time, but I strongly believe it was a very short while. I dont want to watch it again but from what I remember the horse looked to go disunited not lame to start with so that would of felt like lack of co-ordination after he tripped it then nodded slightly before the fence by which time she probably didnt feel it as she was focusin on the fence (the horse seem to forget when he saw the fence and for a stride or two after.) I really believe that if she thought he was lame she would of pulled up, as I cant imagine her thinkin in that short amount of time 'Im winning come on lets just jump the last although your lame!' He wouldnt of been fit to showjump the following day?! Be realistic. Its bad enough she has got to live with it!
Anyway I ant a half empty girl, so I say lets beg to differ! I havent got the time to justify what I type! I only put a comment as I felt it was unfair to critise someone on something none of you have had a experience with! I doubt any of us ever will, as it takes alot to get to that level and you wouldnt throw it all away for the sake of one run?! Also there is no real money in eventing. I am also not naive, just cos I have a different opinion than yourself.
 
Not all the top riders care about their horses, no.

Many do, but there are also plenty who see them as money making machines and couldn't care less if they died. I'd give examples but that would be defamatory

I have no doubt that plenty of top riders DO care about their horses, for the reasons that you've listed above. However, as I stated, I think it very naive of you to assume that BECAUSE they are competing at a top level they MUST love their horses and care to such a degree. That is very assumptive. As Sprial has said, there are plenty who it is generally acknowledged don't give a damn about them...

Okaaay, well the video wasn't slowed up and had a timer on it, so I don't really see how the time span is in the slightest bit debatable. It was what it was...

Well I would suggest you watch it again if you really wish to comment because your memory seems somewhat inaccurate. The horse was far more noticable lame than that.

I am being realistic. I don't believe that she had the specific intent to hurt that horse, or that she even had any specific thoughts about "I'm winning, come on lets just jump the last although you're lame!", that would be idiotic

However, I do believe she was sufficiently reckless and negligent in considering that horse's welfare, as to be found guilty of abuse and punished accordingly.

What a load of tosh! A crippling lame horse, is a crippling lame horse whatever the discipline or level, and it is the riders job to be aware of that
