Can anyone please tell me if the tops of growing potatoes are poisenous to horses.
We grew some spuds this summer and I think most were dug up but there may be some remaining.

I want to allow my horses access to that part of the field but there is something at the back of my mind warning me about the spud tops.

Thanks all.

Any green in the actual potato is poisonous to anything so it's probs not great id an animal with as sensitive gut as a horse to eat them in any number.

Fun fact for the day. The potato is part of the deadly nightshade family! lol Courtesy of yr 8 food tech potato project! lol

As BugseyZ says they are poisonous to most things. They are the same family as tomatoes and tobacco - all deadly nightshade relations

Potato tops definitely poisonous--anything above ground or as above green potatoes, some dispute as to potatoes themselves being poisonous but having heard of Irish horses being fed them and not coming to harm...........my own Irish bred horse loves potato peelings.

Thank you one and all.

I had it in the back of my mind that they were poisenous but couldn't decide if it was a real memory or if I had made it up.

I will scour the area and make sure that there are none left before letting my neddy's venture onto that part of the field.

Give it another few weeks and it will be covered in snow here anyway.
