Hi guys, don't post very often but would like your opinion.
I have been on the search for a tb to bring on and have not found what I want just yet, today got offered a 7 yo ( older than I wanted) out in field for year after racing. (good)
16,1hh (perfect)
pro showjumper who is trainers sons friend tried horse and loved horse said fab jump but just not quite good enough for him( perfect for me, I event)
moves nice, bit babyish for age but that's ok.
BUT it's a mare!
Iv never had a mare before, always disliked them not sure why now. what would u do? Please give me pro mare stories as I really like her!
Just not sure whether to wait for a nice gelding to turn up.
Thoughts???

Crack on! I have always had mares, until recently, absolutely no different generally.

Some mares can be mareish but many are not.

Wouldnt put me off in slightest.

some of the best horse i have known were mares

i personaly love mares but there are definitely mare people and non-mare people. you just have to "get" them and their way of thinking. people who can do that love mares and some people just dont get them and i would advise them to stay well clear of mares.

I never liked mares, but have one now and love her. She is frustrating and bloody opinionated but very clever, picks up things very quickly, and is very affectionate (when the mood takes her

Ive had more Mares than Geldings and I love both, I certainly would never be put off a horse just because it was a mare.

Imo it takes longer to get to know a mare but I find they can be really gritty and really dig deep when you need it most. Once they decide they like you and trust you, thats it then and I find they give 100%. Also even though my mare passed away before I had a chance to do it, I loved the thought that one day after her competitive career she could have a baby for me

Im another one for mares, always had mares. A mare will be your best friend once you get her on side! ive struggled! but im there now, like KatB says tho affectionate when the mood takes her but i wouldnt swap her for the world

Seroiously a good mare can make a great competition horse and try harder for you. Even in the worse case scenario and you find a mare is very hormonal it is now legal to use regumate to control this in all affiliated competitions. Please don't be put off because it is a mare.

i think you can be a mare person or a gelding person.

it is much easier on the whole to really nark a mare off!

however as others have said, if you get a mare on side they tend to dig very deep for you.

i think there is a saying about a good mare being better than a good gelding but i can't remember it!
