The yard where I keep my horse has been cased by gypsies and one of our horses had a plait put in it's mane last night - please tell everyone to be extra vigilant. Yard is on edge of Stoke-on-Trent/Staffordshire Moorlands.

Police are taking this seriously and have asked us to make all horse owners in the area are aware as this is not an isolated case.

There is no proof that plaits in a horses mane result in theft. Its a URBAN MYTH
My horse has been stolen and he didnt have any plait in his mane. Hes been gone neally 6 weeks now.

I am so sorry that your horse was stolen, I cannot imagine the heartbreak that you must be going through :-(

I have always been very sceptical about plaits in manes - but I had never seen one before. The one that we found was so small that unless we'd given the mane a thorough brush through, we wouldn't have notice it. It was mid-neck, thin, plaited only half way down and then roughed up so that it might look like a wind knot. It was slightly unnerving to see.

I wondered if it was a hoax, but we did feel that it would be daft not to take precautions. So we have really upped security on the yard and I am so pleased that we have done. Last night a yard that backs on to ours had all it's tack stolen - so there is definitely something going on in the area.
